According to the Organizing Committee, the Workshop is an important event to promote regional connectivity and develop modern, sustainable agriculture and create a forum for connecting managers, experts, scientists, businesses and farmers to share experiences and introduce high-tech application solutions in agricultural production. From there, shaping a strategy for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change for the Mekong Delta and the South Central region in the coming period.

The leaders of the People's Committee of Can Tho City said that in recent years, the impact of climate change on the Mekong Delta has become increasingly clear and serious: prolonged drought, increased saltwater intrusion, complex landslides, lack of fresh water for production and daily life, extreme weather that is difficult to predict, etc. These challenges pose an urgent need to innovate agricultural production models towards high technology, apply advanced science and technology, improve adaptive capacity and reduce emissions.

At the same time, from July 1, 2025, after completing the administrative unit arrangement and merging with Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces, Can Tho city has a natural area of about 6,360 km² and a population of more than 3.2 million people. This is a great opportunity for Can Tho city to promote its role as a center of economics, science - technology, innovation and logistics; at the same time, contributing to the sustainable development of agriculture in the region.

The workshop aims to develop sustainable agriculture and adapt to climate change.

With more than 511,000 hectares of agricultural land, Can Tho has identified high-tech agriculture as a strategic direction. In recent years, the city has implemented many effective models, such as: Smart rice production towards emission reduction, synchronous application of 3 Reduce - 3 Increase, 1 Must - 5 Reduce techniques; implementing the Project of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice; Applying high technology in vegetable and fruit production: water-saving irrigation systems, greenhouses - net houses, hydroponics, medicinal mushrooms, tissue culture, production according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP... Developing biosafety livestock farming, minimizing environmental pollution; drought-salinity adaptive livestock farming model; Aquaculture according to ASC, SQF, BMP standards,... for export.

However, the leader of the People's Committee of Can Tho City stated that there are still many limitations, including: high investment costs for high technology; the level of technology access is still different; the market for high-tech agricultural products is not stable; digital transformation in agriculture is not synchronized. That requires closer and more effective coordination between the State - enterprises - institutes, schools - cooperatives - farmers.

Faced with unpredictable climate changes, the agricultural sector in some coastal provinces and cities faces severe drought and salinity every year.

Today's workshop is of special importance, aiming to assess the impact of climate change on agricultural production in the Mekong Delta and South Central Coast.

At the workshop, delegates focused on assessing the current status and impacts of climate change on agricultural production in the Mekong Delta and South Central Coast, clarifying challenges in food security and livelihoods; Introducing and sharing technologies and solutions for high-tech agricultural production such as automation, IoT, artificial intelligence, biotechnology to improve productivity, save resources and reduce emissions and presenting practical models that have applied high technology in production, livestock, aquaculture, adapting to drought and salinity conditions and climate change in localities.

In addition, the discussion focused on proposing support mechanisms and policies on credit, agricultural insurance, land, as well as policies to encourage investment and innovation in high-tech agriculture; Strengthening multi-dimensional linkages and cooperation between the State - Enterprises - Scientists - Cooperatives - Farmers to promote technology transfer and replicate adaptive production models.

In particular, delegates focused on discussing the orientation of sustainable agricultural development, associated with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving climate change adaptation and meeting international standards. Connecting trade and exploiting opportunities from free trade agreements, aiming to expand the consumption market for high-tech agricultural products of the region.
