Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that giving students access to AI is one of the solutions to effectively implement the city's breakthrough projects and programs, enhancing the application of information technology and digital transformation of the Ho Chi Minh City education and training sector in the period of 2021 - 2025, with a vision to 2030.
AI lesson for students at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted
RESULTS AFTER STUDENTS LEARN AI
According to the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City education sector, students of specialized high schools and schools with specialized classes learn about mathematical models, understand AI algorithms, program and apply these algorithms to solve specific problems; learn about new applications of AI in various fields, know how to work in groups and how to write scientific reports.
The leader of Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted said that students in the specialized class will learn about mathematical modeling skills for practical problems; mathematical foundations for AI; high-level programming skills; creative skills in using AI as an intellectual support tool for users, helping to liberate labor and creativity in different professions...
Professor, Doctor of Science Hoang Van Kiem
Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted expects that after completing AI topics, students will be able to master English, computer coding, and math; gain practical experience through AI programming projects; develop skills such as management skills, collaboration and teamwork skills, problem-solving skills, and scientific report writing; discover their passion early and have a clear view of their career orientation.
It is expected that 8th and 11th graders will participate in learning about AI topics such as introduction to artificial intelligence, typical applications of AI, exploiting available libraries to apply built algorithms. 11th graders will learn about programming with Python, use the Face-recognition library... and experience practical applications of AI.
After piloting at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, from the new school year 2023-2024, Ho Chi Minh City plans to expand access to knowledge about AI for high school students.
WHAT DO EXPERTS SAY ABOUT WHO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS STUDY ?
According to Professor Hoang Van Kiem, former Chairman of the State Council of Professors in Information Technology, leading expert, and the first scientist to research AI applications in Vietnam, teaching AI to high school students needs to be systematic in knowledge from primary to high school.
Professor Kiem emphasized that to effectively teach AI in high school, it is necessary to combine it with innovation in teaching math and creative thinking for high school students right from primary school. Teaching AI with suitable supporting software can help enhance creative thinking and learning math in high school, right from primary school level very well.
Investing in facilities and equipment for teaching AI requires taking advantage of free or affordable AI software (especially generative AI software). It is not necessary to buy many robots to play with a few times and then give up because of boredom. It is advisable to invest in smart robot products with supporting software so that students can study together, play STEM together, and improve their English and knowledge of modern science and technology.
"Educating children about AI right now is not only about basic scientific and technological knowledge about AI but also about using AI to enhance their learning, creativity and connection abilities... Especially developing their imagination and dreams so that our children not only live safely but also have enough courage to ride the waves of AI and super AI that are continuously rising to look towards the future with countless wonders waiting to be discovered and created", Professor Kiem emphasized.
According to experts, encouraging high schools to include AI content in their core curriculum is a major breakthrough that is worth noting.
Regarding the effective way for students to approach AI, Ms. Dau Thuy Ha, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Online Management Training Joint Stock Company - OMT, said that the learning pyramid model should be followed. The foundation of the pyramid is the lessons/activities introducing AI and getting acquainted with AI in the computer science program. At higher levels, students with a deeper tendency and passion for AI will be encouraged to participate in AI clubs; even higher are national or international AI competitions...
According to Ms. Ha, encouraging high schools to include AI content in their official curriculum is a remarkable breakthrough. After at least one school year of implementation, there will be a basis for drawing on experience to develop a more widespread AI popularization policy, with a specific roadmap for all levels of education and localities. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training proactively creates opportunities to interact and interact with domestic and international AI experts, participate in competitions, and AI exchange programs with international students.
