Perspective of double-decker road researched by Department of Construction
On May 19, Mr. Vuong Quang Hung - Head of the Department of Road Traffic Construction Management, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction - said that multi-storey road solutions have been deployed by many countries around the world to optimize urban land funds.
In Ho Chi Minh City, this option is being studied for application to the expressway connecting the South Saigon urban area to Long Thanh airport, via Phu My 2 bridge.
The project route section passing through Hoang Quoc Viet Street (District 7) has a small planned road width, which does not meet the requirements for traditional underground road design solutions. Therefore, the solution of building a multi-level road in some sections is considered a feasible solution, ensuring increased traffic capacity, saving on site clearance costs, and limiting relocation that affects people's lives.
At a recent working session, leaders of Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province also discussed and agreed on the next procedures to implement the Cat Lai Bridge, Dong Nai 2 Bridge, and Phu My 2 Bridge projects. In which, the Phu My 2 Bridge and Road project will be assigned to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee as the managing agency to organize and implement the project investment.
At the request of the leaders of the two localities, the Department of Construction and the Department of Finance of the city are coordinating with the Department of Construction, the Department of Finance of Dong Nai province and related units to research and agree on the proposed plan, form and source of investment capital for the Phu My 2 bridge construction project.
At the same time, advise and propose the People's Committees of the two localities to report to the City Party Committee and Dong Nai Provincial Party Committee for investment research policies for the two above-mentioned projects.
This group of tasks will be completed and submitted to the People's Committees of the two localities in May 2025. The project is targeted to have its investment policy approved in the fourth quarter of 2025 and start construction in 2027.
According to Mr. Hung, the route of the Phu My 2 bridge and road project starts at Nguyen Huu Tho Street, goes to the East, connects to Hoang Quoc Viet Street to Dao Tri Street, crosses Dong Nai River and connects to Lien Cang Street and then connects to Road 25C (Nhon Trach, Dong Nai).
The project is approximately 16.7km long, with 6 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motor vehicles, with a total preliminary investment of approximately VND 21,484 billion. This is a strategic route, located in a network of 10 main high-speed routes (with few interruptions and few intersections) connecting the center with inter-regional roads.
The expressway is a very new idea that the city has researched and proposed and has now been approved by the Prime Minister in the planning of Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 and included in the general planning adjustment project. The expressway main axis can be built above ground, below ground, underground or combined depending on the actual situation.
The Phu My 2 expressway will, together with the elevated routes of Nguyen Huu Tho Street (HCMC) and 25C Street (Dong Nai), create a traffic axis connecting Tan Son Nhat Airport and Long Thanh Airport.
The route also connects the South Saigon urban area and Nhon Trach new city, creating new development momentum, attracting investment, and promoting regional economic growth.
