On the afternoon of July 21, Vice Chairwoman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Tran Thi Dieu Thuy and representatives of the Department of Education and Training of the city and Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted went to the airport to welcome student Le Phan Duc Man, grade 12, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted (Ho Chi Minh City), who just won a silver medal at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) back to Vietnam.

According to Duc Man, his love for math started in middle school when he regularly participated in city exams and achieved some encouraging results. After that, he passed the entrance exam to the specialized math class at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, where he received dedicated support from teachers to consolidate his knowledge.
"That journey was not easy. In grade 10, I did not pass the traditional Olympic exam on April 30, but I continued to try hard, the following year I won third place in the city team. In grade 12, I won second place, qualifying for the national team. Although I was under a lot of pressure because I felt 2-3 points weaker than my friends, thanks to the teachers organizing a supplementary study schedule, I gradually stabilized and became more confident" - Duc Man shared.
Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy (right cover) awarded a certificate of merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to Le Phan Duc Man.
Talking about the time training the team in Hanoi , Le Phan Duc Man said that although at first he was very worried because he saw that his friends were so good, he gradually got used to the environment, regained confidence and believed in his own abilities.
"When taking the IMO test, I realized that the test required a lot of thinking instead of in-depth knowledge, so I focused on reading the questions carefully, finding the necessary elements, and solving them step by step. The test structure consisted of 6 questions over two days: 3 questions each day from easy to difficult, 1 combination question, 2 geometry questions, 3 arithmetic questions.
I usually finish the easy questions, saving the last time for the difficult part if there is any left. The test has two versions, Vietnamese and English, I do it in Vietnamese and the organizers translate it into English for the international judges to mark. The final result is a silver medal, which I feel is "just enough" and very lucky," Duc Man said.
