Many vegetable growing areas are affected by the weather.
In the vegetable growing areas of farmers in Long Huong, Tan Hai wards, Chau Pha commune... ( Ho Chi Minh City), many areas of leafy vegetables had yellow leaves and were crushed due to heavy rain. Particularly in the vegetable growing area in Chau Pha commune, many areas were completely lost due to being submerged in water for many days due to heavy rain and flood discharge from Da Den lake. According to the people, due to the soft nature of the vegetable, the leaves are easily broken and crushed when it rains heavily, especially during the growing stage.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Lieu's family, residing in group 3, quarter 4, Long Huong ward, is cultivating 4 sao of vegetables, green onions, and herbs. For nearly half a month, there have been continuous heavy rains that have caused the area of vegetables his family is cultivating to be damaged, the leaves to rot, and the heavy rains have also compacted the soil, making it impossible for vegetables to grow.
"Currently, the price of green vegetables sold in the garden is increasing but we don't have many vegetables to sell. Some beds are damaged, yellowed, almost eaten by snails, and some beds are not growing. Therefore, the vegetables take about 5-10 days longer to harvest than in sunny weather," said Mr. Lieu.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, Long Huong ward, said that vegetable cultivation during the rainy season always faces many difficulties because vegetables are easily flooded and crushed, reducing yield by 40-50% compared to the dry season. "My family's vegetable garden has only grown about 30cm high when it continuously rains, causing the leaves to turn yellow. Vegetables are damaged and productivity is reduced," Ms. Ha shared.
Ho Chi Minh City's major vegetable growing area, Lang Cat quarter, Tan Hai ward, is cultivating about 150 hectares. If in the dry season, this area supplies the market with about 70 tons of vegetables every day, now in the rainy season, the output is decreasing by more than half. Ms. Dinh Thi Thanh Thuy's family is cultivating 3 sao of vegetables, with vegetables such as mustard greens, green onions, lettuce, basil, fish mint, and jute. She said: "The heavy rain has affected every family in our Tan Hai ward vegetable growing area. Vegetables are crushed and yellowed in large numbers. Although vegetables have a high price, the yield has decreased in large numbers, so we vegetable growers do not earn much profit. Meanwhile, seed prices are rising."

If in the dry season, with an area of 3 sao of vegetables, Ms. Thuy's family would harvest 1 - 1.2 tons/batch/month, but this time due to the rain, many vegetables were damaged, her family would be lucky to only harvest 400 quintals.
Similarly, in Chau Pha commune - where the vegetable growing area was flooded due to the discharge of Da Den lake and the heavy rains that lasted on November 11. Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung shared that due to the impact of the flood, her family's 4 sao of vegetables, including mustard greens, amaranth, Malabar spinach, etc., were completely lost. Currently, the weather is rainy, the price of vegetable seeds has increased, and the price of vegetables that are ready to be harvested is also increasing, the rain and flooding have damaged all the vegetables, causing a loss of tens of millions of dong, Ms. Dung said.
According to statistics of Chau Pha Commune People's Committee, the whole commune currently has 250 hectares of vegetable growing area, during the dry season, it supplies over 200 tons of vegetables to the market every day. However, currently due to the impact of the recent flood, the whole commune has more than 8 hectares of vegetable growing area submerged in water, causing growers to lose everything. In addition, many vegetable growing areas have also been crushed and yellowed due to the impact of heavy rains lasting for many days, so the green vegetable output of the region is currently decreasing sharply.
Vegetable prices are rising

Currently, vegetable output in leafy vegetable growing areas in Ho Chi Minh City is decreasing sharply due to the impact of the weather. This has led to a decrease in vegetable supply to local markets, causing green vegetable prices to increase sharply. The price of green vegetables in gardens is being purchased by traders for 18-20 thousand VND/kg of mustard greens, 30 thousand VND/kg of lettuce, 35 thousand VND/kg of green onions, while in the same period last year the price was only 2-5 thousand VND/kg. Although prices have increased, vegetable growers are not very happy because of the decrease in output and the increase in seed prices.
According to reporters' records at suburban markets of Ho Chi Minh City such as Phuoc Nguyen, Hoa Long, Ba Ria, Dat Do..., leafy vegetables are at high prices. Prices of green mustard, bok choy, water spinach, lettuce have all increased by 20-45% in just one week. Specifically, lettuce is priced at 45-55 thousand VND/kg (depending on the type), more than double the price in mid-October; water spinach 20 thousand VND/kg, mustard greens 30 thousand VND/kg, tomatoes 50 thousand VND/kg, amaranth, jute 30 thousand VND/kg...
Meanwhile, at the market in the city center, the price of green vegetables is many times higher. At Nguyen Tri Phuong market, Dien Hong ward, many traders are concerned about the price increase of many vegetables in the context of natural disasters and weather that greatly affect growing areas. Although she is used to the market price fluctuations, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh (a trader at Nguyen Tri Phuong market) said that the sharp increase in prices has made business sluggish and difficult. Many types of vegetables such as amaranth, cabbage, lettuce have increased by 40 - 60%, some have doubled compared to before. Specifically, water spinach, amaranth, and mustard are currently being sold by traders for 35 - 40 thousand VND/kg; spinach, lettuce 70 - 75 thousand VND/kg; tomatoes 60 thousand VND/kg...
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, about 60-70% of the vegetables and fruits sold in the city center markets are imported from neighboring localities. The weather not only affects production activities, but also causes fluctuations in the supply and demand market, affecting people's shopping and consumption activities.
In response to market developments, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade recommends that people proactively shop at reputable businesses, stores, and supermarkets with stable prices. At the same time, the department also works with localities and vegetable supply companies to increase the amount of goods coming to the city, avoiding prolonged price fluctuations.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City has directed localities to guide farmers to strengthen pest control measures; proactively monitor the pest situation to promptly prevent and control the disease, preventing it from spreading widely. The Department also advised farmers to prepare natural disaster prevention plans to limit damage in agricultural production.
