On June 18, Mr. Doan Van Tan - Director of the Urban Traffic Management and Operation Center (HCMC Department of Transport) - said that the project to repair Vo Van Kiet Street is about to start.
According to Mr. Tan, the current motorbike lane (from Tan Kien intersection to Saigon River tunnel) consists of 2 sections of road 3 - 3.5m wide and 2 - 2.5m wide, separated by a hard median strip of grass beds and grass beds with trees.
Currently, the traffic volume on the route is increasing, so the lane arrangement like that causes congestion as well as collisions between vehicles.
The project will relocate and cut down 236 trees and remove the median strip separating the two motorbike lanes, helping to widen the road to about 7m, creating a smooth flow for vehicles. The total cost of renovating the above road section is over 13 billion VND, to be completed in mid-September this year.
Vo Van Kiet Street is 60m wide (6-10 lanes), about 13km long from Calmette Bridge (District 1) to National Highway 1 intersection (Binh Chanh District), located in the East-West boulevard axis of Ho Chi Minh City.
The route opened to traffic in 2009, passing through 6 districts of the city: District 1, 5, 6, 8, Binh Tan and Binh Chanh district, is considered a vital route, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with localities in the key economic region of the South.
Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed extending Vo Van Kiet Street to the Hai Son - Tan Do Industrial Park in Duc Hoa district, Long An province.
Regarding the scale of the project, the investment in the new road is about 12.5km long and 60m wide. The project will clear the land once but will invest in phase 1 to build two-way roads, each road is 14.5m wide (the reserve land in the middle is 31m wide). The route will also invest in a complete interchange with Ho Chi Minh City Ring Road 3.
The project has a total capital of about 8,400 billion VND, expected to be invested in the form of public-private partnership (PPP).
