On April 21, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health sent an urgent document to the District Health Department, Thu Duc City; the City Drug, Cosmetic and Food Testing Center and pharmaceutical businesses in the area regarding strengthening the prevention of counterfeit drugs and drugs of unknown origin.

Accordingly, in order to promptly detect, prevent and handle the production, trade and use of counterfeit drugs; at the same time, ensure effective treatment and safety for people's health, the Department of Health requests that pharmaceutical businesses operate within the scope granted in the certificate of eligibility for pharmaceutical business; comply with and maintain the principles and standards of "Good Practice" throughout the operation.

Only trade in drugs with circulation license numbers or import license numbers, with sufficient invoices and valid documents for purchased drugs; do not trade in drugs that are not permitted to be circulated, counterfeit drugs, drugs of unknown origin, recalled drugs, or drugs that do not meet quality standards.

In addition, review and immediately recall detected counterfeit drugs (if any) and promptly provide information to the Department of Health and the Health Department if any suspicious signs of counterfeit drug production and trading are detected. Drug retail establishments must inform people who come to buy drugs about the harmful effects of buying and using drugs of unknown origin.

The Department of Health assigned the District Health Office, Thu Duc City to inform pharmaceutical businesses about the review and recall of detected counterfeit drugs. Strengthen inspection and supervision of compliance with pharmaceutical laws by pharmaceutical businesses in the area, focusing on checking the origin of drugs sold by the businesses; strengthen measures to manage drug wholesale and retail establishments in conjunction with the requirement to connect drug suppliers; strictly handle violations (if any).

Recommend that people only buy medicine at legal retail establishments; increase communication about the risks and harms of buying medicine of unknown origin and arbitrarily buying and using medicine to treat diseases.

The Department of Health assigned the Department of Health Inspectorate to strengthen the inspection and examination of pharmaceutical business establishments in the area, paying attention to the origin and invoices and documents of drug purchase and sale; strictly handling organizations and individuals who violate the law; transferring cases with signs of criminality to the investigation agency.

Coordinate with the police, the Department of Industry and Trade and relevant authorities to strengthen market management measures and conduct investigations and verifications of counterfeit drugs and drugs of unknown origin. Strictly implement tasks and solutions to strengthen the fight against smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeit goods in the city.

Assign the City Drug, Cosmetic and Food Testing Center to increase sampling and quality testing of drugs circulating on the market for drugs at risk of being counterfeited or of poor quality; promptly report detected cases to the Department of Health and relevant authorities.
