Researchers from Tufts University and TH Chan School of Public Health (USA) analyzed the diets of more than 47,513 participants, with an average age of 48.5. Participants reported their diet, including carbs and fiber intake, every 4 years.

Different types of carbs can affect health in different ways, said lead author Dr Andres Ardisson Korat, a scientist at Tufts University. In this study, we wanted to see how each type of carb affects health over 30 years.

The results found that eating the right types of carbs is crucial for healthy aging.

Specifically, there are four types of carbs that help maintain health until age 70. They are carbs from fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. Consuming these four foods in middle age increases the ability to age healthily by 37%, especially in women, according to the medical news site News Medical .

Specifically, middle-aged people who eat a lot of fiber and high-quality carbs from the four foods mentioned above are more likely to stay healthy until age 70 and avoid 11 chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure and Parkinson's disease.

In contrast, a diet high in refined carbs from added sugars, refined grains, and potatoes or starchy vegetables reduced healthy aging by 13%.

High-quality carbs include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, explains Dr. Ardisson Korat. They are high in fiber and contain more resistant starch, which breaks down more slowly in the body. Low-quality carbs include refined grains and added sugars.

Co-author Professor Qi Sun, from the TH Chan School of Public Health, said: This result is consistent with previous studies showing that eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes reduces the risk of chronic diseases, but also shows effects on physical and cognitive function, according to News Medical.
