The resurgence of fighting in Syria is unexpected and disadvantageous for Syrian President Bashir al-Assad and Russia.
It was even more surprising when the anti-government armed forces in Syria were so militarily strong that in just a few days they controlled several major cities in Syria.
Syrian President Bashir al-Assad
Russia was forced to increase its military operations in Syria again and Mr. Assad's government had to mobilize all available resources to counterattack and push back the opposition military forces.
It may be coincidental, but the timing of the uprising and military offensives cannot be ruled out. Russia has been in Syria since 2015 and has played a decisive role in helping Assad and his forces suppress the opposition. But now Russia is focused on the war in Ukraine, and is facing off against the US, EU, NATO and the West, which support Kyiv.
Syrian opposition forces capture key city of Hama
The resurgence of fighting in Syria not only harms Russia and the Syrian government, but also directly threatens the Assad regime and causes great difficulties and dilemmas for Russia. It forces Russia to simultaneously take care of the main issue in Ukraine and the secondary issue in Syria. Russia cannot slow down the war in Ukraine, but it cannot abandon Syria. To that extent, the resurgence of fighting in Syria is very beneficial for Ukraine and its allies. The Syrian government is paying a heavy price for neglecting security precautions, subjectively underestimating the opposition military forces, and failing to take advantage of the opportunity to completely end the civil war in Syria.
