According to the U.S. military, the target was a convoy of U.S. and Syrian forces before being neutralized. The U.S. Central Command added that three U.S. soldiers were also wounded in the attack.
"On December 10, an assessment report was released indicating that the attacker may have extremist ideology, and a decision regarding him is expected to be made tomorrow, Sunday," Syrian Interior Ministry spokesman Noureddine el-Baba told Syrian state television channel Al-Ikhbariya.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump vowed to "retaliate very severely," expressing condolences over the deaths of "three great patriots." He described the incident in an interview with reporters as a "horrific" attack.

The attack occurred less than a month after Syria announced it had signed a cooperation agreement with the US-led coalition against IS and during a visit to the White House by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
In a statement, the U.S. Central Command said the attack, carried out by a lone gunman, occurred "while troops were conducting a meeting with senior leadership" in the town of Palmyra in central Syria. "Allied forces" killed the attacker, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a social media post.
A senior U.S. official said initial assessments suggest ISIS may have carried out the attack, although the terrorist group has not immediately claimed responsibility. The incident occurred in an area not controlled by the Syrian government, according to the official.
The US-led coalition has conducted airstrikes and ground operations in Syria targeting suspected ISIS militants in recent months, often with the participation of Syrian security forces. Last month, Syria also launched a nationwide operation, arresting more than 70 people allegedly linked to the group.
The U.S. has troops stationed in northeastern Syria as part of a decade-long effort to support Kurdish-led forces there.
