In a statement published on the Global New Light of Myanmar , the military information office claimed that armed groups, including the Arakan Army (AA) and the People's Defense Force (PDF), had used the hospital as a base of operations. The PDF is a pro-democracy militia formed after Myanmar's military seized power in 2021.
The statement said the military had deployed necessary security measures and conducted an anti-terrorism operation targeting hospital buildings on December 10. According to the military, those killed or injured were members of opposition armed groups and their supporters, not civilians.

Contrary to the above statement, a senior rescue official in Rakhine said on December 11 that 34 people, including patients and medical staff, were killed and about 80 injured after a fighter jet dropped two bombs on a general hospital in the town of Mrauk-U.
The attack occurred on the night of December 10th, destroying the hospital building. The area is currently controlled by the Arakan Army rebel forces.
On the same day, the United Nations stated that the airstrike was part of a series of attacks that inflicted serious damage on civilians and civilian targets, devastating numerous communities across Myanmar.
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said in a statement posted on social media that he was "horrified" by the attack.
The town of Mrauk-U, located about 530 km northwest of Yangon, has been occupied by the Arakan Army since February 2024. The Arakan Army is the relatively well-organized and modernly equipped military wing of the Rakhine ethnic minority movement, which is seeking greater autonomy from Myanmar's central government.
