The move, described by the European Commission as the "first phase" toward seizing assets to finance Ukraine, has drawn strong opposition from Moscow.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the move as a "large-scale hoax," warning that it could collapse the entire international financial system, including the Bretton Woods system.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also used equally strong language, calling EU authorities "players in hide-and-seek." Russia views this blockade as the first stage of a plan to seize Russian assets under the guise of supporting Kyiv.

The seriousness of the issue quickly escalated. It became a key topic of discussion during the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of the international forum “ Peace and Trust: United Goals for a Sustainable Future” on December 12 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
The two leaders paid "considerable attention" to the situation of frozen assets and both agreed that the EU plan was a "large-scale scam".
