This reaction was evident in the statement of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov to Russian state television on Sunday, December 7: "The adjustments we see in many respects correspond to our vision."
Moscow’s praise of a high-level US foreign policy document is unprecedented. Public consensus on such fundamental geopolitical issues is extremely rare.

Russia’s positive response stems from the strategic content of what Mr. Trump described as “flexible realism.” The doctrine’s focus on national interests and the concept of spheres of influence resonates with Moscow.
Specifically, the strategy pledges to end the notion of NATO as a permanent, expanded alliance – something Russia has long viewed as a threat. It also identifies negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine as a “core” US interest, while warning Europe of the risk of “civilizational obliteration.”
Instead of calling Russia a threat as previous documents had done, the new strategy emphasized the desire to “reestablish strategic stability with Russia.” Calls for a revival of the Monroe Doctrine, which emphasized spheres of influence, further strengthened Moscow’s approval.
The current context is further complicated by the involvement of other geopolitical actors, notably China. Mr. Trump's strategy identifies the Indo- Pacific region as a "key economic and geopolitical battleground."
The Kremlin, meanwhile, remains cautious. Peskov warned of the so-called US “deep state” – a term Trump often uses to refer to internal political forces that could hinder his policies. Moscow’s proactive approach suggests it is well aware that initial praise may be difficult to deliver given the political hurdles in Washington.
The strategic convergence between Mr Trump and the Kremlin opens up the possibility of a turning point in international relations. However, the path from declaration to reality is still thorny, depending on US politics and the ever-changing global geopolitical landscape. The rare positive response from Moscow may be a start, but the future ahead remains challenging.
