Christmas markets have become a distinctive cultural symbol of the year-end holiday season.

The history of these markets dates back to the 13th century, with the first recorded market in Vienna, Austria, in 1298. Since then, the tradition of holding Advent markets has spread throughout Europe and gradually become a global trend, appearing in many countries from Germany and Switzerland to the United States, Canada, Singapore, and Japan.

As the year draws to a close, millions of visitors flock to these markets to immerse themselves in the twinkling lights, the warm aroma of mulled wine, the sounds of Christmas music, and the vibrant festive atmosphere.

Below are 10 of the world's most famous Christmas markets, where you can experience the spirit of the holiday season to the fullest.

1. Wiener Christkindlmarkt (Austria)

Among the approximately 20 vibrant Christmas markets scattered throughout Vienna, the Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz stands out as the most traditional. Located right in front of the historic City Hall, the market recreates a fairytale Christmas world with a giant Ferris wheel, reindeer-drawn sleighs, and a display of the Baby Jesus.

The highlight of the market is a 110m2 ice rink for children and the "Heart Tree" - a large maple tree covered with hundreds of bright red hearts, becoming a special photo spot that attracts visitors. Food stalls serve a variety of Austrian specialties such as hot sausages, gingerbread, and especially fragrant Christmas cocktails.

2. Basel Christmas Market (Switzerland)

Basel is home to Switzerland's largest and most diverse Christmas market. Divided into two bustling areas at Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, the market features around 150 stalls offering a plethora of decorations, spices, candles, and handcrafted gifts.

The Münsterplatz area is designed like a "fairy tale forest," where children can decorate gingerbread cookies, make candles, or create Christmas stars. From St. Martin's Tower, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the old town sparkling with lights.

Meanwhile, at Barfüsserplatz, the 13-meter-tall Christmas pyramid is the perfect spot to enjoy mulled wine and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere.

With hundreds of wooden stalls selling handicrafts, gifts, mulled wine, and Alsace pastries, Strasbourg is the ideal stop to fully experience the Christmas spirit. In particular, the giant Christmas tree in Kleber Square is an iconic symbol that every visitor wants to see.

The Fira de Santa Llucia dates back to 1786. Originally a one-day festival celebrating Santa Llucia, it has now become a three-week fair. Located in front of Barcelona Cathedral, the market is divided into four distinct sections: Nativity scene, plants and ornaments, handicrafts, and musical instruments.

One of the market's highlights is the Caga Tió activity – a giant Christmas log that, when struck with a stick, "gives" candy and gifts to players, creating special fun for children and visitors.

The Lodge complex is a favorite spot for food and drink enthusiasts, featuring bars, beer gardens, and Christmas-themed restaurants.

Additionally, the Josephine Shaw Lowell fountain here becomes particularly charming in winter because the water often freezes, creating a scene straight out of a movie.
