Major Nguyen Khac Thinh was mobilized by the unit to participate in rescuing isolated people in neighborhood 6, Quy Nhon Dong ward. At this time, the flood water was rising high and flowing rapidly, making it very difficult to approach households. Without hesitation, Major Nguyen Khac Thinh and his teammates tied ropes to themselves, jumped into the water to pull the canoe close to the houses, and rescue people. During the rescue process, he unfortunately stepped on a sharp object in the water, deeply wounding his left foot. Suppressing the pain, he used his shirt to temporarily tie up the wound and continued to rescue people.
Major Nguyen Khac Thinh said that, receiving orders from the commander, his team (consisting of 4 people) urgently went into the flood to rescue people. At that time, his team had to weave through the flood water to go deep into the hamlet. They searched for low-lying houses. During that process, he did not know when he was injured. After safely bringing a mother and child (including a 9-month-old baby) and an elderly couple from Nhon Binh onto the rescue boat, he felt his legs burning and stinging. After that, his teammates used their shirts to bandage his wounds.
During the historic flood, Major Nguyen Khac Thinh and his teammates organized 8 canoe trips to reach flooded and isolated areas; brought 55 people (mainly the elderly and children) trapped out of the flooded areas and searched for missing people. In addition, he and his teammates transported and supplied food, drinking water, medicine, and other necessities to 75 households in isolated areas.

Colonel Doan Ngoc Bau, Political Commissar of Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard, said that all soldiers of the Provincial Border Guard are devoted to the people and are ready to rush into the flood to save them. Among them, Major Nguyen Khac Thinh is a typical example; a model of the spirit of dedication to the people; an example for other comrades to follow.
According to Gia Lai Province Central General Hospital, Major Nguyen Khac Thinh was injured in his left foot, with a suspected rupture of the extensor tendons of his 3rd, 4th, and 5th toes. Doctors have performed surgery to treat the wound.
The brave and selfless actions of Major Nguyen Khac Thinh not only saved dozens of lives but also sowed a strong seed of inspiration in the community. His story is the most vivid proof of the spirit of "Forgetting oneself for the country, serving the people".
