Presenting the Russian Embassy in Vietnam with the book series "Vietnamese for Foreigners"

Attending the ceremony, on behalf of the Institute of Oriental Languages and Cultures, there were Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat, MSc. Le Thi Nhuong, in charge of foreign affairs of the Institute, and Meritorious Teacher Ngo Tran Ai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Publishing Investment -Educational Equipment Joint Stock Company.

The delegation was received by Mr. Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Vietnam; Mr. Stanislav Fokin, Counselor of the Embassy and Mr. Andrey Borodenko, Deputy Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture.

Speaking at the book donation ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat, Director of the Institute of Oriental Languages and Cultures, emphasized that Vietnam and Russia have a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat affirmed the deep and long-lasting relationship between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in many aspects, especially emphasizing the two-way interactions in the fields of education, culture and arts. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat personally spent years as a researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“For many people, including me, Russia is considered a second homeland. The land of love and warm people has welcomed and supported Vietnamese students and workers for many years. We will never forget that and always wish to have more exchanges. There are embassy officials studying Vietnamese at our Institute. This is also an opportunity for teachers to support more, not only teaching but also taking them to practice”, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat shared.

Representing the Institute of Oriental Languages and Cultures, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat pledged to support the staff of the Russian Embassy who wish to learn Vietnamese and, together with Associate Professor Ngo Tran Ai, presented the book set "Vietnamese for Foreigners" with a 6-level training framework to the Ambassador and the staff of the Embassy.

“With this set of books dedicated to the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Vietnam, we hope to help Russian officials and students working in Vietnam have the opportunity to learn Vietnamese and be good at Vietnamese to continue doing their jobs, building diplomatic relations between Russia and Vietnam,” said Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat.

Mr. Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Vietnam, shared that the cooperation between the two countries in the fields of culture, science, education, including the dissemination of the two countries' languages, has a long history. Mr. Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko personally studied Vietnamese since the 80s of the last century, at Moscow State University.

“I remember that my group of friends and I at Moscow State University used textbooks printed on faded paper. Nowadays, learning Vietnamese is easier, because there are many textbooks and the level and quality of publication are also very high,” said Mr. Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko, adding that Vietnamese has been an inseparable part of his work for a very long time.

“This book series will help further enhance the ability to learn and understand Vietnamese, as well as gain a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture, ethnicity and people because language is considered the soul of each country,” said the ambassador.

According to the ambassador, recently, not only tourism, the number of Russians coming to Vietnam for work is also very large. In Russia, the number of Vietnamese people living and working is about 100,000 people, with about 25,000 people in Moscow alone. Therefore, promoting the learning of Vietnamese and Russian languages is very necessary, helping the two peoples to get closer, consolidate and develop more closely the traditional friendship between the two countries.

The Ambassador expressed his hope that the Institute of Oriental Languages and Cultures and Vietnamese publishers will continue to publish many new textbooks for foreigners, including Russians.

Speaking at the ceremony, Meritorious Artist Ngo Tran Ai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Education Equipment and Publishing Investment Joint Stock Company - the unit that organizes the compilation and joint publishing of the Canh Dieu textbook series, shared that currently, many Russian works are being taught in Vietnamese high schools. Meritorious Artist Ngo Tran Ai expressed his hope that after the meeting with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Vietnam, there will be more new Russian literary works being introduced into Vietnamese schools for students to study.

Associate Professor Ngo Tran Ai also emphasized that language is a tool of communication. When overcoming the “language barrier”, ethnic groups will come closer together, sympathize, harmonize, and exchange cultures. This is a solid foundation for friendly cooperation between countries.

At the event, Mr. Gennady Stepanovich Bezdetko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Vietnam, presented Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat and Meritorious Student Ngo Tran Ai with a set of books about Pushkin - the poet known as "The Sun of Russian Poetry", a famous author who has attracted a large number of Vietnamese readers over the past decades.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat, the book series “Vietnamese for Foreigners” is the first Vietnamese language teaching book series for foreigners compiled according to the world’s 6-level competency assessment framework. The content in the book is written very carefully, carefully selected, focusing on the characteristics of Vietnamese culture.
When studying this book, foreigners can visualize Vietnam in many social aspects such as education, military, etc., especially both traditional and modern culture of Vietnam. Therefore, the book series meets the needs of foreigners who want to communicate and work in Vietnam, especially embassies; helping them to approach Vietnamese quickly, firmly and deeply.
Talking about the time spent preparing and compiling the book series, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Dat confided that this is the accumulation of his entire teaching career. "The book series is not just a purely Vietnamese language teaching book, but is an integration of a lot of knowledge and experience from my 46 years of teaching at the old University of General Sciences (now Hanoi National University) and my writing career; at the same time, it is also the experience drawn from many times I worked as an expert to help friendly countries such as China, Russia, France, and Cambodia compile Vietnamese language books," he said.
