The announcement marks an escalation of tensions in the area near the demarcation line between the two Koreas, an area that has been relatively quiet in recent years.

Earlier in July, the South Korean military recorded North Korea installing mines and barricades and creating wastelands along the heavily militarized border area, although these actions have caused some accidents.
The move was in response to military drills in South Korea, which North Korea called the "top hostile state and unchangeable main enemy," as well as frequent visits by US nuclear strategic assets to the region, the General Staff of the Korean People's Army said.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been rising in recent times as North Korea continues to step up its military activities, including strengthening its defense capabilities and testing new weapons, while the US and South Korea continue to conduct military exercises.
