Talk to children from the heart

Children can ask computers, artificial intelligence (AI) dozens, hundreds of questions, and the response is always methodical answers, sometimes AI even compliments the child: 'Oh, this is a very interesting question'. As for us adults, have we ever faced children's questions with indifference, judging them as 'nonsense'?

QUESTIONS FROM KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van, Principal of Soc Nau Kindergarten (An Hoi Tay Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), will always remember a time when she took her children to participate in a sports festival. While waiting for the bus, the teacher and students were talking together, a 5-year-old girl sighed and said: "Teacher, I will not get married in the future." Ms. Van was surprised by the girl's very serious and determined words. She moved closer to the girl and asked: "What happened to you? Can you tell me more clearly?" The girl whispered to her about the times her father spoke harshly to her mother, hurting her mother, leaving her haunted. Ms. Van hugged the child, whispering to her that negative things, if any, are not representative, not everything in this life. She also told herself that she would have to find a way to discuss with parents about how to communicate in front of children.

"Every question and statement from children is often not just a random sentence. Every teacher who is dedicated to his students will know how to observe and listen to them, and from there, with the sensitivity of a teacher, can understand whether the children are sad or happy; what they are worried or insecure about or what they want to share. From there, teachers should care more about the children, and can help many children," Ms. Van shared. And that is also what makes teachers - the people who accompany students every day - different from machines, different from AI.

Ms. Van always shares with teachers in the school that they should never underestimate children's questions. Children may be immature, naive, and their expressions are not yet clear, but many of their questions are very smart, and adults often cannot answer them immediately. During a lesson where the teacher was teaching about natural phenomena such as rain, sunshine, and how to walk safely in the rain, a child in the kindergarten class asked: "Teacher, how is a storm created?". Preschool teachers, in addition to preparing knowledge to be able to answer many of children's questions, also need to be skillful in communicating with children, so that children are not afraid to ask questions, always maintain a spirit of curiosity and love of learning, thereby developing their thinking.

THE HEART OF A TEACHER - WHAT MACHINES DON'T HAVE

Master - Doctor Pham Van Giao, Director of the Institute of Applied Psychology - Education, said: In the context of the digital age and the strong and widespread development of AI, education is facing profound and breakthrough changes. Teachers are no longer simply the ones who provide and impart knowledge but also have to develop personality and life skills for students. The challenges that teachers face in this context are enormous.

No matter how advanced technology is, the heart of the teacher and understanding still plays an extremely important role. Especially in the educational environment, the emotional factor and the connection between teachers and students have a strong impact on the comprehensive development of students.

AI can answer questions, provide information instantly, process data at super speed and help students find answers immediately without being judged or evaluated. However, no matter how fast and intelligent AI is, it cannot replace the important role of teachers in connecting emotionally and spiritually with students. "No matter how advanced technology is, the teacher's heart and understanding still play an extremely important role. Especially in the educational environment, the emotional factor and the connection between teachers and students have a strong impact on the comprehensive development of students," said Master - Doctor Pham Van Giao.

CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN TO DEVELOP EMOTIONS AND CRITICAL THINKING

Master - Doctor Pham Van Giao believes that teachers need the ability to understand and empathize. A student can ask AI any question without fear of being ridiculed, AI can answer everything but AI cannot recognize non-verbal signals from students, such as anxiety, stress, lack of confidence or difficulty in integrating. But, teachers can do this.

Don't let a day come when children choose to ask AI instead of adults.

Ms. Bui Thi Thuy, Vice Principal of Ly Tu Trong Primary School (Tam Thang Ward, Ho Chi Minh City), hopes that parents, teachers, and adults will be more patient and learn how to communicate with their children so as not to lose their curiosity and desire to learn.

Parents and teachers need to encourage children to ask questions. Because if we are indifferent, grumpy, or judge children's questions, one day, children will choose to ask AI, ask computers, consider AI as friends instead of talking and exchanging with adults.

Teachers also need to create opportunities for children to develop their emotions and critical thinking. Teachers not only help students understand a problem but also encourage them to analyze it, ask questions and think deeply about it.

Furthermore, in the digital age, where isolation can occur in online learning environments, teachers need to restore face-to-face relationships and group activities. This will enable students to learn to communicate, share emotions and build empathy – elements that AI cannot provide.

In addition, according to Mr. Giao, teachers need to teach students how to ask questions and develop self-learning skills. While AI provides answers, teachers can help students develop the ability to self-study, search for and check information from many sources.

"And especially in the AI era, teachers need to be strict and fair. In an era where everything can be manipulated by technology, the teacher's strictness becomes an important factor for students to learn to respect discipline and responsibility, creating a serious and fair learning environment. Strictness does not mean indifference or coldness, but is the determination in maintaining ethical and academic standards, thereby helping students develop disciplined, self-disciplined and respectful working habits," shared Master - Doctor Giao.
