Support to help people with disabilities integrate into the community

Leaders of the Provincial Association for the Support of People with Disabilities presented gifts of encouragement to Mr. Do Van Thai (Viet Dan commune, Dong Trieu city) on the occasion of the Vietnam Day for People with Disabilities (April 18).

Mr. Ngo Quang Duc (55 years old, Hong Ha ward, Ha Long city) lost a leg since childhood due to the consequences of illness. Mr. Duc is a severely disabled person, receives monthly subsidies from the State and is given a free health insurance card. Despite losing a leg, Mr. Duc still chose to be a barber to support himself and his family. Mr. Duc shared: Having been a barber for 20 years now, I am very happy because not only can I ensure my daily life, but I can also raise my children to go to school.

Similarly, Mr. Do Van Thai (48 years old, Khe Thuong village, Viet Dan commune, Dong Trieu city) has been severely disabled since childhood. Although he is paralyzed in one leg, with his own willpower and determination, Mr. Thai has become a shining example of rising to become rich. After getting married in 1998, Mr. Thai and his wife moved out to live on a piece of land given to them by their parents, along with 4 sao of rice fields.

Mr. Thai said: We are a young couple, while I am disabled, with 2 children born in succession, and our income depends only on rice cultivation, our family's life is very difficult. With the desire to escape poverty, my wife and I rented 3 hectares of land to grow Vinh orange trees. After nearly 6 years, the orange trees have produced stable harvests, helping my family have a better life. However, when growing oranges was no longer as effective as expected, my family transferred the orange garden to someone else.

Realizing that Khe Thuong village has a natural lake of more than 3 hectares, which is convenient for fish farming, Mr. Thai signed a long-term lease contract with the Commune People's Committee. In 2021, Mr. Thai invested 500 million VND to build a 400m2 corrugated iron roof house ^.   both for living and for ecological fishing services. Currently, the ecological lake serves Mr. Thai's family with an income of about 300 million VND/year.

Mr. Ngo Quang Duc and Do Van Thai are just two typical cases of people with disabilities in the province who have overcome their disabilities to rise up in life.

The Provincial Association for the Support of Disabled People - TMC, philanthropists and local authorities presented gifts to support disabled people in difficult circumstances in Hai Lang commune, Tien Yen district (October 2024).

According to the Provincial Association for the Protection of the Disabled, there are currently more than 23,000 disabled people in the province, of which severe and extremely severe disabilities account for 90% of the total number of disabled people in the province. There are many causes of disabilities such as congenital, consequences of war, traffic accidents, work accidents... leading to loss or defect of a body part.

Chairman of the Association for the Support of the Disabled and the Disabled in Lanh The Vinh province said: There are still some people with disabilities facing difficulties in housing, employment, medical treatment, social access and integration. These are disadvantaged people who need the support of the community and society. Therefore, in recent years, the association has connected with many organizations and individuals to support and help the disabled in the province. Thanks to that, it helps them to reduce difficulties and have the opportunity to rise up and build a better life.

Currently, the Provincial Association for the Protection of the Disabled and the Disabled is organizing training courses in occupations and professions suitable to the health and abilities of the disabled; organizing community activities for the disabled to participate, share and connect and integrate. At the same time, continue to mobilize resources to support the construction of houses for the disabled; it is expected that in 2025, the association will mobilize the construction of 8-10 houses (the lowest support level is 60 million VND/house). In March 2025, the Provincial Association for the Protection of the Disabled and the Disabled coordinated with philanthropists and local authorities to start the construction of 2 houses for the disabled.

With the drastic participation of all levels and sectors, the activities to support PWDs in Quang Ninh have been attracting the attention and promoting the responsibility of organizations, individuals and the community. Hopefully, PWDs will increasingly have easier access to basic social services to overcome difficulties in life and integrate into the community.
