In 2003, when returning to Vietnam, through the Assorv Organization (France), artist To Bich Hai began her journey to find her roots. Since then, every year in France, she has organized volunteer groups, together creating festivals and performing arts and culture to raise funds to support 3 orphanages: Hoa Mai Center in Da Nang and Vi Thanh Center, Can Tho . At the same time, she has provided scholarships to poor students with good academic performance, especially building 2 kindergartens in Cao Bang province: Khau Thanh Kindergarten (Trung Khanh District) and Van An Kindergarten (Ha Quang District).
Origin Paintings
In her artistic journey, To Bich Hai has devoted much of her thoughts to the concept of "origin". She wants to search for memories and feelings about her homeland through objects present in nature and daily life.
"The exhibition Origin can be said to be a journey following the major steps in my career with many different materials such as oil paint, graphite, wood sculpture. What I want to say a lot about "origin" has been expressed in my works, and I hope that through the exhibition the audience will understand me more", artist To Bich Hai expressed.
The Origin oil painting series focuses on the visual effect when the tree roots are painted in large format, tightly woven into the tree trunk like ropes. The tree roots run along the entire trunk of the tree, like nerve fibers connecting each piece of the artist's memory.
At the exhibition, two series of works Listening to the Whispering Stones and Listening to the Sighing Trees invite the audience to reflect on the primordial things of nature.
Fruit Series
A special highlight at Origin is a series of still life lacquer paintings, expressing a new perspective of the artist when she raises the issue of the origin of nature through slices of fruit. A series of portraits of children takes the audience into the small branches of the artist’s life when she was away from home. Finally, the installation sculpture Totem brings the viewer back to the simplest things of traditional worship customs.
Listening to the Whispering Stones
Director of the Vietnamese Women’s Museum Nguyen Thi Tuyet said that To Bich Hai is an artist of traditional and modern souls. Her art is imbued with history and spirituality, like a bridge between cultures and eras. It expresses a desire to convey, where each work becomes a dialogue between the origin and the journey of the artist.
