Walking along the road to Phieng Khoai commune, we were impressed by the late-ripening longan gardens with heavy branches. We visited the longan garden of Mrs. Dinh Thi Chung's family, Thanh Yen 1 village, when the family was fertilizing the fruit trees with organic fertilizer. Mrs. Chung warmly greeted us: My family has 1.5 hectares of longan. Taking advantage of the land area of the longan garden, I also intercropped 700 tangerine trees. Each year, on average, my family harvests 31 tons of various fruit trees, excluding expenses, earning more than 400 million VND. This year, the harvest is expected to be more than 40 tons.
Continuing to Kim Chung 1 village, people here are harvesting persimmons. At the persimmon purchasing and packaging point of Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu's family, each styrofoam box is loaded onto a truck to be transported for consumption. Ms. Thu said: There are 3 types of persimmons in Phieng Khoai, including persimmons. For more than a week now, my family has been purchasing 2-3 tons per day, at a price of 12,000 to 15,000 VND/kg, to sell to traders in the provinces.
Besides the gardens of crispy persimmons here, which are carefully tended and covered with fruit to prevent pests and diseases, the hills full of longan fruit are also equipped with automatic irrigation systems. Mr. Vu Van Dan, Kim Chung 1 village, said: My family has 3 hectares of fruit trees including plums, longans and crispy persimmons. The family focuses on planting and caring for fruit trees in the direction of organic production, installing automatic irrigation systems, thanks to which the yield and quality are good. Each year, the fruit trees yield from 35 to 40 tons. The total income after deducting expenses is more than 200 million VND.
The process of bringing fruit trees to the Phieng Khoi border area has encountered many difficulties. In 1990, plum trees were planted in Hang Mon, Kim Chung and Con Huot villages, but due to lack of care, productivity and quality were low; transportation was difficult, so consumption was difficult. Since 2015, many fruit tree planting models have been widely deployed by people, such as plum trees, grafted longan, crispy persimmons, roasted pears... New varieties and systematic fertilization techniques have been deployed.
In recent years, people have applied techniques of pruning, pruning, and stimulating plums to flower early and flower late to spread the plum crop; about 70% of households have invested in drip irrigation systems and applied science and technology, making plum trees a key crop that brings in the main income. Up to now, the whole commune has more than 2,500 hectares of plums, successfully building the Phieng Khoai "Ruby Plum" brand that is known to many domestic consumers and has good consumption. In early 2025, plum growers here received good news when they were recognized by the authorities as the first high-tech plum growing area in the province. In the 2025 crop alone, about 35,000 tons were harvested. The yield and quality of fruit products have gradually increased, so consumption and prices have become more stable.
Up to now, the people in the commune have nearly 300 hectares of other fruit trees with high economic value such as: longan, persimmon, pear, orange, grapefruit... Most of the fruit tree areas have been installed with automatic irrigation systems and biological pesticides. The commune has coordinated with specialized agencies and units to plan and build large-scale, concentrated specialized fruit tree growing areas; promote the transfer of fruit tree planting and care techniques to local farmers according to the value chain, apply science and technology and mobilize households to join production. Currently, the whole commune has 7 cooperatives specializing in growing fruit trees. Each year, the output from fruit trees of all kinds reaches 40,000 tons. Many households in the commune have an income of more than 300 million VND/year, some households earn billions of VND.
Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: The commune is coordinating with the Vietnam Post Agricultural Products Exchange to organize training and instruct households on livestreaming skills to sell products on TikTok and Facebook. In particular, live streaming from the garden and packaging warehouse so that customers can clearly see the freshness, while connecting with shipping units to deliver fast, ensuring product quality when reaching customers. Thanks to that, fruit products in the commune are known in many places, with some families livestreaming 200-300 orders per day.
Orienting the development of fruit trees in the coming time, Phieng Khoai commune continues to improve the productivity and quality of fruits, striving for a fruit output of more than 50,000 tons/year. Developing high-tech organic agriculture associated with linking production and processing; surveying climate and soil conditions and selecting, testing and popularizing suitable late-ripening plum varieties. Encouraging cooperatives, organizations and individuals to invest in post-harvest processing facilities. Strengthening the promotion and advertisement of the potential and strengths of the locality, creating favorable conditions for large enterprises to come and invest, forming production and processing chains and improving productivity and product quality... helping farmers to produce agriculture effectively, promoting socio-economic development in the commune.
