China's UN representative Fu Cong wrote in a letter to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi had "seriously violated international law" and diplomatic norms when she said a Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from Tokyo.
"If Japan dares to intervene militarily in the Taiwan Strait situation, it will be an act of aggression," Ambassador Fu Cong wrote, according to a statement from China's mission to the United Nations. "China will resolutely exercise its right to self-defense in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, and resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Prime Minister Takaichi, who took office last month, told a question in the Japanese parliament on November 7 that a possible Chinese attack on Taiwan – located more than 100km from Japanese territory – could be considered “a situation that threatens Japan’s survival,” a legal designation that allows the Japanese prime minister to deploy the country’s military.
Takaichi's remarks have fueled tensions with China that have gone beyond diplomacy in recent days, with China saying Japan has "seriously damaged" trade cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
China's Foreign Ministry advised Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near future in the middle of this month.
Not long after, on November 17, Japan also issued a travel advisory to China.
In addition, film distributors in China have suspended the release of two Japanese animated films amid rising tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.
More than 10 Chinese airlines have also refunded flights to Japan through December 31, with an estimated 500,000 tickets canceled.
On November 19, China announced a ban on all Japanese seafood. A series of exchange events between the two countries were also disrupted. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also said that an annual meeting between scholars from both countries scheduled to be held in Beijing this weekend had been postponed. An event promoting Japan-China friendship in Hiroshima, scheduled for November 21, was also canceled.
