Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Niger, who visited the scene, said some students were lucky to escape. "According to our records, 215 students and 12 teachers were kidnapped by the terrorists," Yohanna said.
Local authorities said the school had failed to comply with an earlier order to close boarding schools. Immediately after the attack, security forces arrived to investigate and conducted a search of nearby forests to rescue the victims.

This is the latest mass kidnapping of students in a series of consecutive attacks, forcing local authorities to order the closure of 47 colleges.
The incident at St. Mary's School is considered the largest kidnapping since the abduction of more than 200 students in Kaduna state in March 2024.
This week’s spate of violence also included the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from a boarding school in Kebbi state on November 17, and an attack on a church in Kwara state. A church official revealed that 38 worshippers had been taken and the kidnappers were demanding ransoms of up to 100 million naira ($69,000) each.
The dire security situation has forced Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to cancel his trips to South Africa and Angola.
