Not only Thai jackfruit, these days China also buys red-fleshed jackfruit from Vietnam at sky-high prices.
These days in the West, fruit farms continue to buy red-fleshed jackfruit to export to China at sky-high prices.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Phi - a jackfruit grower in Vinh Long said that her garden mainly grows Thai jackfruit, red-fleshed jackfruit accounts for a small proportion. In previous years, the type 1 red-fleshed jackfruit was mainly consumed domestically at a price of 40,000-60,000 VND/kg depending on the time.

Recently, fruit farms have come to the garden to buy red-fleshed jackfruit to export to China at very high prices. Five days ago, she cut and sold more than 1 ton of red-fleshed jackfruit. Of which, grade 1 jackfruit weighing 8-9kg/fruit costs 100,000 VND/kg, grade 2 (6-7kg/fruit) costs 85,000 VND/kg.
“This is the first time red-fleshed jackfruit in the garden has been sold at such a high price,” she said, revealing that she earned nearly 100 million VND from selling more than 1 ton of red-fleshed jackfruit. This morning, the warehouse announced a price reduction, so she cut nearly 400 kg of red-fleshed jackfruit but still sold it for 75,000-85,000 VND/kg depending on the type.
In Tam Binh district (Vinh Long), Hau Loc Dragon Fruit Cooperative also sells red-fleshed jackfruit in the garden for 85,000-90,000 VND/kg. The cooperative has 70 hectares of red-fleshed jackfruit, of which 30 hectares are in harvest.
The leader of Hau Loc Dragon Fruit Cooperative said that last year, 1 hectare of red-fleshed jackfruit brought in a profit of 700-800 million VND. This year, the price is one and a half times higher, so the profit will certainly be much better.
Some gardeners in Can Tho also cut and sell grade 1 red-fleshed jackfruit at 85,000-105,000 VND/kg, grade 2 at 75,000-85,000 VND/kg, and grade 3 at 30,000-35,000 VND/kg.
Talking to PV.VietNamNet , Mr. Dang Manh Khuong - a fruit collector in Can Tho, admitted that China mainly imports Thai jackfruit, but now they are also stepping up their purchases of red-fleshed jackfruit. This type of jackfruit is not widely grown, so they buy as much as they can at very high prices.
Mr. Khuong has been specializing in red-fleshed jackfruit for several years now. However, he only focuses on the domestic market. During this difficult economic period, there are many outstanding debts from wholesale customers who buy jackfruit. Fruit warehouses are asking to buy large quantities of red-fleshed jackfruit at high prices to export to China, so he switched to selling to them.
Jackfruit prices fluctuate daily. He cited that a week ago, grade 1 red-fleshed jackfruit was purchased at VND100,000/kg, but this morning the price was VND85,000/kg. Compared to the same period last year, the price of red-fleshed jackfruit is now twice as high and four times higher than the current price of Thai jackfruit.
“However, it is only the beginning of the harvest season, so there are not many jackfruits ready to be cut and sold yet,” he shared. This is also the reason for the high price of red-fleshed jackfruit.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Western provinces, the current area of red-fleshed jackfruit is estimated at about 2,000 hectares. This type of jackfruit is mainly grown in Soc Trang, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Long An, Vinh Long...
According to preliminary data from the General Department of Customs, in just 10 months of 2023, China spent nearly 3.2 billion USD to buy fruits and vegetables from Vietnam, a sharp increase of 167% over the same period last year.
This country of 1.4 billion people is the largest customer, accounting for 66.4% of Vietnam's total fruit and vegetable export turnover in the past 10 months. Accordingly, China buys a large amount of Vietnamese fruits such as durian, watermelon, dragon fruit, lychee, banana, jackfruit, etc.
