The character in the story that has been making the rounds on social media platform Douban is a 20-year-old girl surnamed Fu, living in Jinan City, Shandong Province.
Ms. Pho said that when she was in elementary school in 2003, she and her mother went to the supermarket to buy eggs. After returning home, she chose an egg that was smaller than the usual chicken egg and asked her mother to boil it so that she could bring it to school for breakfast the next day.
However, the next day, because she left it in her bag, she forgot and didn't take it out to eat. A few days later, she suddenly remembered that the egg was still in her bag. Afraid that the egg would spoil, she didn't dare eat it but couldn't bear to throw it away, so she hid it from her mother and put it on top of the refrigerator.
After 2 months, Ms. Pho's mother found the egg but the egg had shrunk, smaller than its original size and looked like a plastic egg, the color was a bit like a salted egg, under the light it would have a red glow. She continued to hide the egg from her mother and put it in a ring box, but completely forgot about it.

Twenty years later, while cleaning her house recently, Ms. Pho found the ring box. When she opened it, she was surprised to see that the egg had not rotted but had retained its solid texture, was the size of a pistachio and quite hard.
Ms. Pho told the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald that when exposed to light, the egg turned blood red, with sunken patterns, looking like a ruby.
She was so excited that she quickly took a photo and posted it on social media, attracting a lot of attention from netizens. Some people even nicknamed the egg "Pharaoh's egg".

Netizens also wanted to know why Ms. Pho's 20-year-old boiled egg did not rot but had a strange texture and color like a precious gem. One netizen commented: "Thank you, I probably would have never had the chance to see such a strange egg if you had not posted this picture." Another person joked that the post helped him find a new business opportunity: "If I boil some eggs now, will I be rich in 20 years?"
According to the South China Morning Post , Ms. Pho guessed that the egg might have turned red in the first few days after being left because it was winter, the weather was very dry and cold.
Meanwhile, Professor Deng Xuejian of the School of Life Sciences at Hunan Normal University said that these strange eggs are popularly known as "ghost eggs" or mutant chicken eggs. These eggs usually only have egg whites without yolks. As for the reason why the eggs have a strange red color and shrink, Mr. Deng said that it is still necessary for microbiology experts to conduct further research and explain in detail.
