Protein is important for health
According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, protein promotes metabolic reactions, helping your body function smoothly. Protein is also an essential micronutrient that helps you lose weight, strengthen bones, and promote heart health.
How much protein is in an egg?
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the protein content of eggs depends on the size of the egg. Here is a breakdown of the protein content of different types of eggs:
- A small 38 gram egg contains 4.9 grams of protein.
- One medium egg weighing 44 grams contains 5.5 grams of protein.
- A large 50 gram egg contains 6.3 grams of protein.
- One large 56 gram egg contains 7 grams of protein.
- A large 63 gram egg contains 7.9 grams of protein.
Protein in egg yolks and egg whites
Egg yolks are said to be the only place where most of the nutrients and fat are found, so they essentially contain half of the protein content of an egg. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, there are about 2.7 grams of protein in the yolk of a large 63-gram egg and 3.6 grams of protein in a 33-gram raw egg white.
Do raw or cooked eggs contain more protein?
Protein in raw eggs: 6.3 grams
Protein in hard-boiled eggs: 6.3 grams
Protein in a whole fried egg: 6.26 grams
Even though there are different ways to eat eggs, you still get about the same amount of protein from each type of egg.
