The first three volumes of Singapore's science comic book series for children ( The Young Scientist) were introduced to many children at Ho Chi Minh City Book Street over the weekend. They are: "Did you know that elephants can't jump", "The dangers of light pollution" and "Airless tires".
Each book contains interesting, everyday, and familiar stories explaining scientific issues taught in elementary schools.
The book "Did you know that elephants can't dance" is a comic strip about a class when Mr. Snake is absent and Ms. Leopard is teaching instead. Ms. Leopard instructs the students to freely choose the physical education subject they like.
And Little Elephant fell many times while playing jump rope. Simply because "all the bones in Little Elephant's legs point downward, unable to bend to create the jumping action...". The story also introduces young students to other animals that cannot jump such as hippos, rhinos, giraffes... and also tells that Elephants spread their ears wide to threaten enemies.
After that story, this book also has many other scientific stories such as how seeds germinate, the life cycle of seeds, the second heart, beware of the angry king cobra...
At the Ho Chi Minh City Book Street , many children were engrossed in reading science comics. Vy, a third grader, was engrossed in holding the book "Light Pollution" and said: "I just learned that rice has so many colors."
Speaking with Tuoi Tre , Dr. Le Dinh Phong - head of the information technology department at Hoa Sen University, who participated in the project to bring these books to young Vietnamese students - said that he wanted to nurture passion and inspire dreams of science for students in the country.
"It is true that children today still lack books and scientific documents that are explained in a lively, gentle, and easy-to-understand way to help them easily access and be inspired to learn about the world around them.
Having the opportunity to go to school and pursue a research career, I see more and more the importance of passion, dreams and knowledge accumulated from my school days. And I hope that there will be more scientists nurtured from schools and Vietnamese families through The Young Scientist " - Dr. Le Dinh Phong, a robotics expert, said.
Mr. Nguyen Thuan Thanh - Director of Seednet Books Company Limited, the unit that brought this book to Vietnam - said that The Young Scientist is a series of comic books developed based on the primary school science curriculum of the Singapore Ministry of Education and Training . The books have three levels: level 1 for students in grades 1 and 2; level 2 for students in grades 3 and 4; and level 3 for students in grades 5 and 6.
This unit has won the copyright to publish this book in Vietnam, with each volume having 10 copies per year. Currently, the book is being released in Singapore, Malaysia, India, China, Hong Kong (China). Vietnam is the next country to publish this book.
"We hope that science will be absorbed into the minds of young children through interesting, familiar and easy-to-understand stories. Therefore, we have done our best to bring the book to Vietnamese students," said Mr. Thanh.
