In recent days, the dating show "Possessed Love" has caused a fever on social networks in many Asian countries, including Vietnam.
According to the Korea Times, the characters participating in this dating show all work in the spiritual field. They are young shamans, fortune tellers, tarot readers...
Among them are a prestigious Yonsei University mathematics graduate turned fortuneteller, a tarot card reader, a young shaman carrying on a family tradition, and a shaman who specializes in exorcisms.
In the first episode, the contestants make predictions about their destined spouses. They search for suitable partners through fortune-telling and saju (a type of Korean horoscope).
On the cards, the participants' names are called by mysterious nicknames such as White Sheep, Blue Cow, Blue Dog, Black Mouse...
Many viewers believe that this reality show has unique and never-before-seen things, such as the first date taking place at a temple, the girl showing off her talent for exorcism, the fortune teller giving fortunes to a tarot reader...
Cultural critic Jung Duk-hyun commented that "Possessed Love" has a freshness that easily attracts young audiences. He said that the show cleverly combines traditional elements with modern trends, creating uniqueness and appeal.
"We see statements like 'I lack the water element (an element of the four pillars)' or 'That person is too water-dominant' appearing more often than comments about appearance or personality. In addition, the audience will be curious to see whether these magicians' predictions are correct or not," the critic said.
No longer associated with images of hanbok, temples, incense or exorcism rituals, "Possessed Love" calls the young participants "MZ shamans" to express their youthful, modern but mysterious nature.
In episode 3, young shaman Hongjo mentioned "Exhuma" - the box office phenomenon of early 2023. He shared that as a shaman, he got goosebumps watching the spirit possession and spirit calling scenes of the actors in the movie.
Shaman Iyul also agrees that the exorcism rituals in "Exhuma" are portrayed realistically and vividly.
The hit "Exhuma" combines Korea's unique historical and religious stories, bringing a different experience to the audience.
Director Jang Jae Hyun's work shows the potential of Korean religious and spiritual materials in the process of cultural export, which can now be called K-Occult.
Since then, TV shows like "Possessed Love" have also shown their appeal to young people, when they combine two popular elements: dating and spiritual stories.
The Korean mystical and spiritual genre is also expected to become a new export product of the kimchi country, not just a temporary trend.
