JPY/USD exchange rate today 5/9/2025
The JPY/USD pair continued to decline to near 0.689 JPY/USD. The reason is that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) has been more “soft” in recent decisions, while also lowering its growth and inflation forecasts. This has led many to believe that Japan is about to end its interest rate hikes, causing the Yen to weaken and the US dollar to strengthen.
The BoJ continued to tone down its hawkish stance at its May 1 meeting by lowering its inflation and growth expectations. Swap market data now only expects a single 25 basis point rate hike to 0.75% over the next two years. This further weakens the yen’s appeal and supports JPY/USD to remain bearish.
