Mr. Kim Sang Sik "turned the car"

It seemed like the door to the 33rd SEA Games had closed for Tran Thanh Trung when he was not on the list of U22 Vietnam to participate in the Panda Cup - the tournament considered the most important rehearsal for coach Kim Sang Sik for the largest sports event in the region.

That absence immediately gave rise to many speculations: Thanh Trung was not suitable for the philosophy that the Korean strategist built, or his ability to integrate with his teammates was not up to standard, besides the physical problem.

Tran Thanh Trung was given a chance to return.

But as soon as U22 Vietnam returned from China, coach Kim Sang Sik made a decision that surprised many people: adding Tran Thanh Trung to the team list, along with Le Phat and Duc Viet for the final training trip before finalizing the official list of 23 players to go to Thailand.

Why?

The first and most obvious reason is that U22 Vietnam suffered a big loss after the Panda Cup when Van Truong got injured. The absence of this midfielder caused the midfield to lose an important regulating factor, forcing coach Kim Sang Sik to quickly find a replacement. In the context of not having many options left, Thanh Trung became a reasonable option to fill that gap.

But the more important reason lies in the tactical issue. Not only in the Panda Cup, U22 Vietnam has shown significant limitations in launching attacks. The ability to launch from the back line, link up the midfield or create deep opening situations have not met the requirements. Looking around, Coach Kim Sang Sik could not find any suitable face to realize the attacking ideas given to U22 Vietnam.

After coach Kim Sang SIk lost Van Truong, U22 Vietnam lacked a creative player in midfield.

In this aspect, Tran Thanh Trung possesses the qualities that U22 Vietnam is lacking: modern football thinking, good basic skills, the ability to maneuver in a narrow area and especially enough tactical vision to create a transition from defense to attack, which is expected to be the "key" to opening up sharper attacks for U22 Vietnam.

Saying that does not mean that this Vietnamese-American midfielder will quickly win a position in the U22 Vietnam squad, if not even want to say that he needs to try harder than the previous times he was given the opportunity if he wants to participate in SEA Games 33.

However, at least for now, coach Kim Sang Sik has given this midfielder a chance to return, opening up hope for Tran Thanh Trung personally after a few months of returning to Vietnam to play football without making much of an impression.
