Ukraine recaptures village in Zaporizhzhia

VnExpressVnExpress18/06/2023

A Russian official said the Ukrainian army had recaptured the village of Piatykhatky in the Zaporizhzhia region, more than a week after launching a counter-offensive.

"The enemy's 'wave-like' attacks have yielded results, despite huge losses," Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-appointed official in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, said on the Telegram messaging app today.

According to Rogov, after taking control of the village of Piatykhatky, Ukrainian forces are holding out there and are being hit by Russian artillery fire. Fierce fighting continues in the area, he added.

Ukraine has not commented on the information.

The Russian Defense Ministry said on the same day that its forces had repelled a series of Ukrainian attacks in three frontline areas, with Kiev exerting the strongest pressure in Zaporizhzhia. The statement did not mention the village of Piatykhatky.

It is difficult to judge how successful the Ukrainian offensive has been over the past few days. The Ukrainian army has captured several villages in the disputed area, but it is expected to take weeks just to reach the first fortified Russian defense line. This will be a real test for Ukrainian soldiers, as the Russians have been preparing their defenses for months.

The Russian Defense Ministry said last week that the Ukrainian army continued to suffer heavy losses on the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk fronts. Kiev lost many soldiers and weapons, including Leopard 2 main battle tanks and M2 Bradley armored vehicles, after launching a series of attacks on Russian defenses. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine had “no chance” of success in its counter-offensive.
