Kurakhove, located west of Donetsk, has long been one of Ukraine's key defensive strongholds in the region.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the fighting for control of Kurakhove was extremely intense. The Russian army used artillery, aircraft and armored vehicles to attack the VSU positions. Faced with fierce attacks, Ukrainian army units were forced to retreat, leaving the town of Kurakhove to Russian forces.
Military analysts say that the control of Kurakhove gives Russian forces a strategic advantage and allows them to target major VSU logistics centers. According to experts, this loss could be the beginning of a larger Russian military offensive in Donbass.
Meanwhile, WSJ quoted sources as saying that Ukraine plans to issue a statement saying it is “ready for peace … but it must be a lasting peace .”
According to sources, Mr. Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff of President Volodymyr Zelensky, has traveled to Washington to “establish relations” with the team of US President-elect Donald Trump.
WSJ noted that the meeting with the Ukrainian delegation was attended by US Vice President-elect James David Vance, Trump's future National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and the person the 47th boss at the White House wants to appoint as special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg.
Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sibiha announced that Chief of Staff Ermak had traveled to the US to hold meetings, including with Trump's representatives. President Zelensky also repeatedly acknowledged the risk that Washington would stop supporting Kiev if Trump returned to the White House.
