The wave of artificial intelligence (AI) is creating a profound revolution across the globe. From education, healthcare to industry and agriculture , AI is changing the way people learn, work and make decisions. And for the first time, Vietnam has the opportunity to join the world right from the starting line in this technological revolution.

AI - The new driving force of innovation

In the digital age, innovation is no longer just about new ideas or products, but the ability to apply knowledge, technology and data to improve productivity, efficiency and competitiveness. AI is the most powerful tool to make this happen, helping every individual, business and management agency accelerate in the digital age.

According to Mr. Tran Viet Hung, founder of startup Got It in Silicon Valley, AI is a rare opportunity for Vietnam to shorten the development gap.

"AI is not just a tool, but a 'digital employee' that helps each person work 5-10 times more efficiently. For the first time in history, Vietnam can keep up with the world right from the starting line."

In recent years, many Vietnamese organizations and businesses have proactively explored open-source AI as a way to save costs, increase initiative and data security. Typical projects such as the ViGen Project, a collaboration between AI for Vietnam, the National Innovation Center and Meta Group (USA), are building a large-scale open Vietnamese data set, helping AI models understand and process the Vietnamese language more accurately. These initiatives are contributing to the formation of a digital knowledge ecosystem, spreading the spirit of innovation from the grassroots, paving the way for a new generation of digital citizens in Vietnam.

Industries are stepping up their AI adoption.

At the recently held AI4VN 2025 Forum, many technology experts pointed out that computing infrastructure and human resources are two factors that determine Vietnam's competitiveness in the AI era.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hung, Director of Viettel AI Technology, said: "To train a large language model like Llama 3 405B, Meta used 16,000 H100 GPUs and completed it in about 80 days. If Vietnam only used a small server cluster with 64 H100 GPUs, it would take us up to 55 years to do the same thing." Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hung said that this difference shows the gap in computing infrastructure between Vietnam and developed countries, and emphasized the need to soon invest in national data centers and specialized supercomputer clusters for AI, considering it a vital foundation for Vietnam's digital future.

Currently, the country has about 41 commercial data centers, with a total designed capacity of more than 220 MW, a modest number compared to the need to train large-scale AI models. Experts suggest that Vietnam should soon build a national data center and deploy a GPU infrastructure sharing model (GPU as a Service) between universities, research institutes and businesses to optimize resources.

At the same time, developing AI human resources must be considered a strategic priority. Vietnam currently lacks AI engineers, data experts and highly qualified programmers. Programs such as STEAM for Vietnam are at the forefront of training digital skills and AI application skills for hundreds of thousands of students and teachers, contributing to the formation of a new human resource foundation for the country.

From Open Source AI to Generative AI - The Leap of Creative Industries

Open source AI is becoming a lever for sustainable development. This direction helps Vietnamese businesses be more proactive in technology development, adjusting models according to their own needs, while ensuring control of domestic data. Many large domestic corporations such as FPT, Viettel, VinAI, MISA... have invested heavily in this field. AI is opening up new spaces for Vietnam's creative industry, from content production, media, education to healthcare and e-commerce. However, along with opportunities come challenges in digital content management such as deepfake, false news, and copyright infringement.

Experts recommend the early promulgation of regulations on labeling AI-generated content, traceability, and the establishment of an independent auditing mechanism for underlying AI models to ensure the transparency and safety of the technology. AI is not only a technology, but also a culture of innovation. For sustainable development, Vietnam needs to build an open AI ecosystem, in which the State creates policies; businesses invest and commercialize; schools and institutes undertake research and training; and people actively apply and innovate.

Take advantage of the strategic opportunity AI wave to create a prosperous Vietnam.

The Law on Artificial Intelligence, which is being developed, will be a national legal corridor for AI development, clarifying the principles: Putting people at the center, protecting data and privacy; Ensuring transparency, fairness, and safety in AI applications; Clearly defining responsibilities when AI causes errors or damage; Encouraging research and testing of new technologies (sandbox); Building a set of national standards on AI, ensuring the ethics and explainability of models.

Vietnam also needs to expand international cooperation in AI research and training, connecting with the US, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc. to share experiences, attract experts and investment resources, and participate deeply in global open-source AI organizations and forums.
