Application of science and technology in agricultural production

Applying science and technology (S&T) to agriculture to produce clean and organic agricultural products is an inevitable trend of the current market. In order to catch up with this trend and restructure agriculture in the area, in recent times, Phong Tho district has actively promoted the application of S&T in all stages of agricultural production. Thereby, gradually improving the productivity and quality of agricultural products in the area, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction.

“Witnessing” the first grape and asparagus growing model in Phong Tho district in Vang Bo village (Phong Tho town), we saw the determination and expectations of Truong Phat Lai Chau One Member Co., Ltd. - a unit that invested systematically and on a large scale from the greenhouse system, irrigation, seedlings... to create organic agricultural products. Mr. Dau Xuan Van - Director of Truong Phat Lai Chau One Member Co., Ltd. shared: “From September 2022, the company will plant 1 hectare of grapes with 2,500 black-seeded grape trees, nearly 1,000 milk grape trees and 1 hectare of asparagus. With the goal of changing the mindset and working methods of local people in applying science and technology to agricultural production, since implementing the model, the company has used modern machinery to conduct experiments, test soil quality and temperature to survey and evaluate suitability before planting. Milk grapes are grown from 100% imported varieties, a high-class grape variety - this is the first grape variety to be planted in the province. In all stages, the Company uses modern machinery and equipment, uses guaranteed organic fertilizer products, and is environmentally friendly towards clean, organic agricultural products for consumers in and outside the area".
In order to promote the application of science and technology in agriculture, in recent years, agencies, units, and People's Committees of communes and towns have increased the transfer and application of science and technology in agricultural production, especially restructuring the agricultural sector to suit the practical situation in the locality. In cultivation, the district has promoted the conversion of crop varieties into production. In 2022, 8,604 kg of certified pure rice seeds were supported for winter-spring crop production; 9,162 kg of hybrid corn for the autumn-winter crop, 44,095 kg of lime for field improvement. Expand and develop the area of local specialty rice (te rau, sticky rice...) with an area of 231.7 hectares in the communes of Sin Suoi Ho, Ban Lang, Nam Xe, Dao San... by linking households and enterprises to form specialized production areas for high-quality pure rice combined with processing and consumption. Continue to support the conversion of inefficient crop structures to high-yield tea cultivation such as PH8 and Kim Tuyen.

Officials from the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the town government inspected the grape and asparagus growing model of Truong Phat Lai Chau One Member Co., Ltd. - a model applying science and technology in cultivation.

Develop some new fruit tree varieties such as: GL4 mango, passion fruit, VH6 pear and transfer technology to support the renovation of mixed gardens with an area of 126.86 hectares of mango and pear. Call on individuals and households to expand the development of medicinal plant growing areas, especially Lai Chau ginseng. Expand the development of the chain linking the planting and consumption of sugarcane with a scale of 105 hectares; expand and form the production, processing and consumption area of arrowroot with a scale of 145 hectares. Thanks to that, food security is ensured, in 2022 the total food output will reach 36,971 tons (an increase of 22 tons compared to 2021); form a concentrated production area with a scale of over 130 hectares.
Regarding livestock and aquaculture, promote the application of science and technology in improving breeds and advanced livestock techniques. Through support projects, the district raises awareness and consciousness of livestock care and development in the area from free-range livestock farming without grass cultivation to livestock farming with barns and grass cultivation. Integrating capital sources to support the construction of barns and biogas tanks; veterinary work and disease prevention and control are also of interest to the district. Expanding some aquaculture areas according to planning and developing cold-water fish farming with some breeds of high economic value such as salmon and sturgeon in highland communes. Focusing on converting some traditional fish breeds to farming some high-yield fish breeds such as V1 hybrid carp, monosex tilapia... Up to now, there are 4 cold-water fish farming facilities in the area; the district has supported the construction of 1,600m2 of barns, 350m3 of biogas tanks; Build and transfer a buffalo breeding model with a scale of 49 heads; herd growth rate reaches 5%/year.

In order to create 3-star OCOP products, Duong Yen Cooperative (Phong Tho town) invested in a system of ponds and applied science and technology to the stages of raising salmon and sturgeon.

Along with that, promote propaganda and mobilize people to implement mechanization in production; bring modern equipment and machinery into the stages of harvesting, sowing and caring. Through the State's support programs, distribute machinery such as plows, harrows, small capacity harvesters, combined rice threshers... to people. By the end of 2022, the district will have 76 combine harvesters, over 4,820 tillage machines of all kinds, 309 mini motorized rice threshers, 1,370 seed separator machines, 518 mini food processors... Mechanization contributes to the correct implementation of the crop schedule, frees up labor and reduces about 7-10% of intensive farming costs and changes farmers' awareness in applying science and technology to agricultural production.
Mr. Vu Huu Luong - Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: Determining the promotion of the application of science and technology in agricultural production to achieve sustainable and long-term effectiveness, the important factor and deciding the success or failure is that people trust and follow. Therefore, the district focuses on vocational training for farmers. Promote calling and attracting companies and enterprises to invest in production facilities and economic models that apply science and technology. Up to now, the whole district has 5 facilities applying for policies, surveying and completing investment policies in the area. From the above facilities, people can witness with their own eyes, directly do and summarize experiences, and apply them appropriately. Along with that, the district continues to build brands for products that have achieved 3-star OCOP such as: Ban Lang sticky rice; AZ Phong Tho white horse glue; 3 ancient tea products: Mo Si San red tea, Mo Si San yellow tea, Mo Si San green tea; Salmon floss products, Duong Yen cut sturgeon... From the application of science and technology in agricultural production in the area, it contributes to improving productivity, product quality, creating jobs, increasing income for people, reducing poverty and promoting restructuring of the agricultural sector in the area".
