In the current cattle breed structure of Tuyen Quang province, about 75% of the total herd is local yellow cattle, with low mature weight, slow growth, average weight of males is 220-250kg and cows from 160-180kg, low meat ratio of about 40-42% compared to live weight. The extensive, small-scale farming direction is showing inefficiency. During 36 months (from December 2021 to November 2024), Tam Loc Green Environment Company Limited in Group 26, Tan Ha Ward (Tuyen Quang City) has successfully implemented the project "Application of scientific and technological advances to develop high-yield BBB (Blanc - Bleu - Belge) hybrid beef cattle farming in Yen Son district, Tuyen Quang province".
The group conducted a survey on the health of the mother cow herd.
According to Veterinary Engineer Tran Duy Thinh, the project includes selecting female cows to serve the breeding of high-quality beef cattle, ensuring that the crossbred animals achieve the necessary superiority in health and weight. The project implementation team also organizes selection and assessment of livestock breed quality according to regulations on breed management. Applying the good livestock breeding process "Global Gap" to create an environment for sustainable livestock development. The project's goal is to evaluate the results of building a model of raising high-yielding crossbred beef cattle from Zebu cows, crossbred animals in the Sind cattle herd program and 3B cows from Belgium, to improve productivity and meat quality, thereby improving the economic efficiency of livestock farming for households.
3B crossbred calves have superior weight compared to native calves.
During the 3 years of implementing the project in Nhu Khe commune (Yen Son) with an investment of 8 billion VND with the support of technology transfer from the Ba Vi Cow and Grassland Research Center (Hanoi), the project team has created nearly 200 calves from the artificial insemination method. To improve the quality of food, the research team has tested planting 7 hectares of elephant grass, creating jobs for local workers, the grass yield according to the project is about 300 tons/year, meeting the food needs of mother cows and calves according to the project.
The research results of crossbreeding 3B cows with local cows to create hybrids for breeding and meat production with productivity increased by 20-25% compared to local cows. The hybrids produced are highly adaptable to dry climate conditions, limited food sources as well as limited financial capacity of people in investing in cattle farming, which is the right direction to quickly meet the demand for beef consumption in the market. The average weight of 6-month-old calves is 174kg, 12-month-old calves is 309kg, 20-month-old calves is 377kg. This is one of the successful hybrid combinations and is applied in many localities across the country.
According to Mr. Tran Van Tuyen, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhu Khe Commune (Yen Son), the implementation of the 3B high-yield crossbred cow project in the locality is bringing positive results. Through monitoring with the project implementation team, the crossbred calf herd is developing well. Currently, the commune has guided people to register to buy calves from the project, thereby improving the quality of the local cow herd and increasing income for breeders.
Silage to improve nutrition for crossbred calves.
Veterinary engineer Tran Duy Thinh affirmed that in the context of increasingly narrowing grazing areas, the 3B crossbred cattle breeding model is an effective direction. Through the model, economic efficiency for people can be gradually improved, agricultural by-products can be utilized, and climate change can be adapted to become more and more complex. Improving the quality of beef cattle with crossbred cattle will have great potential for development and expansion, helping to improve the stature of local beef cattle, thereby bringing income to farmers.
To ensure the quality of the breed when raising it on a large scale, first of all, breeders need to grasp the technical process of caring for and raising high-yielding meat, the growth cycles of cattle, have techniques for intensive cultivation of high-yielding grass varieties, and process green roughage from agricultural and industrial by-products as year-round feed for the cattle to develop effectively. According to statistics, the effectiveness after implementing the project is estimated at about 14 billion VND.
The successful application of the project has contributed to diversifying the source of high-quality cattle breeds in Tuyen Quang. According to the plan, Tam Loc Green Environment Company Limited will continue to maintain and expand the scope of the project to support and expand the connection with households that have participated in the project, other households in need to form a sustainable chain of commodity production, moving towards registering the Tuyen Quang cow brand.
