Application of artificial intelligence in agricultural production

The Department of Agriculture and Environment cooperated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Griffith University to install an artificial intelligence system in spring rice production in 2025 in Hoang Loc commune (Hoang Hoa).

With a raw material area of 7,000 to 8,000 hectares of sugarcane, Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company (Tho Xuan) has actively deployed digital applications to improve productivity, quality of raw material area management, and save production costs. In 2022, the company will cooperate with the government organization AUS4INNOVATION under the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the University of Wollongong, Australia and related units in Vietnam to install and transfer smart eye technology (Smart Eye) in raw sugarcane production.

This is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution combined with drone technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) to help companies and sugarcane growers monitor field moisture, optimize irrigation, nutrient levels and disease in sugarcane. Thereby, technical staff and sugarcane farmers make timely treatment decisions to improve productivity and reduce production costs.

Director of Lam Son High-tech Agricultural Research and Development Center - Lam Son Sugarcane Joint Stock Company (Tho Xuan) Le Huy Khiem said: Along with smart eyes, the company is applying Geographic Information System (GIS) with AI system to analyze the cultivation process, respond to weather changes in each cultivation area and warn the technical team to make appropriate adjustments. All information on sugarcane areas is integrated on the screen over time, the production manager at the center coordinates all actual information and makes forecasts for the people. In the stage of harvesting and transporting raw sugarcane, the company applies vehicle coordination on the map, avoiding congestion, wrong routes or delays to ensure appropriate production plans, and most importantly, reducing production costs.

In the spring crop of 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Environment coordinated with Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Griffith University to install an AI system to measure and collect data on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rice production in Hoang Loc commune (Hoang Hoa) and Ha Long commune (Ha Trung) with an area of nearly 10 hectares. Through the installation of sensors to measure CH4 emissions through alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation control and humidity, temperature, PH, NPK indicators... The system will also support the verification of management methods, prevent post-harvest losses, and not burn straw after harvest through satellite images. Thereby, the system helps people monitor GHG emissions and optimize activities, reduce costs, increase income, and cultivate to reduce GHG emissions, creating a foundation for profit from carbon credits.

According to the Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, Vu Quang Trung, the application of AI in agricultural production solves many current problems related to the management, production and consumption of products... Using AI in production helps increase productivity and production efficiency through devices that detect early production problems such as pests or bad weather. This helps people take measures to prevent and minimize risks and production costs. AI applications help farmers manage land, water plants and harvest agricultural products in an optimal way. At the same time, it helps the agricultural sector predict environmental instability and take measures to prevent, combat and minimize damage.

Currently, the total agricultural land area in the province is 242,675 hectares. In order for farmers to have access to new technologies, the agricultural sector and localities in the province are actively promoting and raising awareness about AI applications in agricultural production as well as developing digital infrastructure and digital platforms. Along with that, coordinating with businesses and scientists to organize training courses and transfer technology to people and cooperatives to apply in production practices.
