Developing cage fish farming in Thuong Xuan

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Being a locality with Chu River flowing through and the water surface area of ​​hydroelectric plants such as Cua Dat, Xuan Minh, Bai Thuong always ensures cleanliness, suitable depth, good water circulation suitable for the development of cage fish farming. Promoting the above advantages, in recent years, Thuong Xuan district has had many solutions to encourage and support people to develop cage fish farming, initially bringing high economic efficiency.

Taking advantage of the water surface of Cua Dat irrigation and hydroelectric reservoir, many households have developed cage fish farming.

Realizing the potential and advantages of developing cage fish farming on Cua Dat irrigation and hydropower reservoirs, in 2020, Mr. Nguyen Van Sinh and a number of households in Thuong Xuan town established Cua Dat Aquaculture Service Cooperative. Cooperative members were supported by the District People's Committee with 10 million VND/standard cage; at the same time, they participated in training courses, transferred scientific and technical advances in cage fencing, fish care techniques; and supported linkages in raising and consuming products. To date, the Cooperative has attracted 32 members, developed 100 cages, with grass carp, black carp, red tilapia, catfish, and monosex tilapia according to VietGAP process. On average, the Cooperative sells 80-90 tons of fish each year, with an estimated revenue of 5-6 billion VND. Currently, the Cooperative's dried ditch fish has been recognized as an OCOP product.

Catfish is considered the main fish raised in Cua Dat irrigation and hydroelectric reservoir.

Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Thuong Xuan district, Do Dinh Minh, said: In order to support people in developing cage fish farming, in 2018, the People's Committee of Thuong Xuan district issued the Project "Supporting and encouraging investment in developing agricultural production in Thuong Xuan district, period 2019-2021". In which, the district supports the development of cage fish farming in the direction of biosafety in the Cua Dat irrigation and hydropower reservoir area. Accordingly, each household participating in cage fish farming is supported by the district with 10 million VND/fish cage that meets technical standards. In addition, the central budget also supports 29 fish farming households in the district from 8.8 million to 10 million VND/household to invest in making cages, buying breeds, food and equipment for production.

Tilapia is favored by customers and brings high economic efficiency.

To facilitate the signing of farming and product consumption contracts, Thuong Xuan district has directed the establishment of Cua Dat Aquaculture and Service Cooperative and Chieng Ban Cooperative. Up to now, the two cooperatives have attracted 40 members, developing 150 fish cages (mainly in Cua Dat irrigation and hydropower reservoir). In addition to Cua Dat reservoir, some other localities in the district are also effectively exploiting the water surface area for cage fish farming, such as: Xuan Minh Hydropower Plant reservoir has 32 households raising fish in cages, with 34 fish cages; Tho Thanh commune has 8 households raising fish in cages, with 11 fish cages... initially bringing economic efficiency to the people.

The output of fish products of Cua Dat Aquaculture and Service Cooperative is relatively stable.

Along with capital support, Thuong Xuan district directed relevant departments and offices to organize training courses and transfer science and technology in fish farming in the direction of VietGap. Thanks to capital and technical support, most households now raise fish in cages using nets instead of traditional cages made of bamboo and reed as before. On average, each year, fish output in Thuong Xuan district reaches 200 tons, bringing in over 17 billion VND.

However, cage fish farming in the district still faces many difficulties due to the lack of capital, the lack of application of modern farming processes, and the lack of proper techniques in water environment management and fish disease prevention, so the economic efficiency is not high... In the coming time, Thuong Xuan district will continue to encourage households and cooperatives to expand the area of ​​cage fish farming in hydroelectric reservoirs. In particular, focusing on aquaculture in the direction of commodity production; continuing to have stimulus policies so that people have capital to invest in cage fish farming.
