Uric acid is a natural substance the body creates when it breaks down purines, a substance naturally produced by cells and found in everyday foods, such as meat, seafood, and vegetables.

Normally, uric acid dissolves in the blood system and is excreted through the kidneys, but when it is not excreted completely, it accumulates in the body causing hyperuricemia. The consequences can silently lead to an increase in gout, kidney stones and even heart-related problems (over time).

Water acts as the body's natural detoxifier, helping to dilute uric acid, making it easier to excrete through the kidneys. When the body is dehydrated, it leads to an increase in uric acid levels in the blood, increasing the likelihood of crystal formation in the joints and kidneys.

According to the Journal of Nephrology, drinking enough water can help prevent uric acid kidney stones by diluting urine to reduce crystallization and flushing out small uric acid crystals before they have a chance to stick together and grow into larger stones.

As a result, even mild dehydration slows down the kidneys to the point where the body cannot remove waste products effectively. That is why people who consume too much protein, alcohol or have a sedentary lifestyle often have higher uric acid levels.

2. How much water is enough?

Although there is no general method for water intake, most people need about 2000ml of water per day, but the recommended total water intake is 40ml of water/kg of body weight/day. However, depending on climate, lifestyle, intensity of physical activity... the amount of water intake needs to be changed accordingly.

However, how you drink water is just as important as how much you drink. Instead of drinking large amounts of water at once, it is much more beneficial to drink small sips throughout the day. Starting the morning with a glass of warm water is a habit that not only wakes up the kidneys but also helps kick-start the detoxification process in the body.

If you don't want to drink plain water, you can flavor your water by:

  • Add cucumber, mint or lemon for a mild, refreshing alkalizing effect.
  • Drink coconut water to replenish lost fluids and maintain electrolyte balance.
  • Herbal teas such as nettle, green or dandelion, help promote kidney detoxification and provide antioxidant benefits.
  • Add fresh ginger slices to water or tea for a warming, metabolism-boosting effect.

It is recommended to avoid beverages containing added sugars, including many packaged juices and many soft drinks. These beverages often increase fructose intake, a compound that increases uric acid production in the body. Additionally, alcohol consumption, especially beer, can exacerbate this problem due to its high purine content and contribute to dehydration.

3. Combine diet and lifestyle to control uric acid levels

Drinking enough water alone will not solve the problem if the diet is not scientific and continues to increase uric acid levels. Therefore, it is necessary to limit foods rich in purines, such as shellfish and red meat, increase fruits and vegetables with higher water content such as watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, oranges, spinach...

Additionally, foods rich in vitamin C, such as gooseberries, guavas, and citrus fruits, should be added to help the body excrete uric acid more effectively. Cherries have been shown to be particularly effective in reducing gout flare-ups due to their anti-inflammatory compounds.

Healthy kidneys maintain uric acid balance by filtering about 180 liters of blood each day, removing waste and toxins. Dehydration slows this process, allowing uric acid to build up. Staying hydrated helps your kidneys filter efficiently and function properly.

To further enhance this effect, ensuring adequate hydration combined with light physical activities is advisable such as light walking, yoga or doing stretching exercises to significantly improve blood circulation as well as speed up metabolism, increasing the body's ability to detoxify.

Staying well hydrated is a simple habit that can make a significant difference in maintaining healthy uric acid levels and overall kidney function.

Along with adequate hydration, balanced nutrition and regular activity will support the body’s natural cleansing abilities, maintaining optimal energy and health. However, this is not a substitute for medical treatment.
