On November 26, the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) announced that the hospital had just received and successfully removed a foreign object from a special case.
Specifically, patient NGH (11 years old, Lam Dong ) was hospitalized for suspected swallowing of a foreign object. Medical history revealed that about 7 hours before admission, the patient cried and complained of neck pain. The family discovered 5-6 sewing needles next to where the child was sitting, so they suspected that the child had swallowed a sewing needle.
The child was taken to a hospital near his home for examination. X-ray results revealed a foreign object resembling a sewing needle in his digestive tract, so he was transferred to the City Children's Hospital for treatment.
At the hospital, the child was conscious and had stable vital signs. X-ray images showed a radiopaque foreign body shaped like a sewing needle, approximately 4 cm long, located in the upper abdomen. It is known that the child had a history of mental retardation diagnosed 2 years ago.

Faced with the emergency situation, Dr. Le Duc Loc - Department of Gastroenterology and the surgical team quickly performed an endoscopy of the esophagus and stomach and removed the foreign object.
When inserting the flexible endoscope through the mouth into the upper digestive tract, it was noted that the foreign object was located at the D2 position of the duodenum, with slight scratches on the duodenal mucosa. The foreign object was then safely removed by the doctors. The baby's health is now stable and is recovering well.
Dr. Le Duc Loc said that swallowing foreign objects is a common accident in children and is especially dangerous for children with mental retardation due to limited awareness and ability to recognize risks. This case was fortunately detected early and treated promptly, if delayed, the foreign object could cause intestinal perforation, severe infection, and even life-threatening.
Doctors recommend that parents should be especially careful and observe their children when they play, avoiding leaving small, sharp objects that can be dangerous within their reach. If you suspect your child has swallowed a foreign object, you must immediately take them to a medical facility that can diagnose images (ultrasound, CT scan, etc.) as soon as possible. Absolutely do not arbitrarily pick your child's throat or force them to vomit because it can easily cause more serious damage.
