On May 15, Lang Son General Hospital announced that it had just received treatment for a child who was hospitalized 2 months after being bitten by a dog.
Upon admission, the child was in a very serious condition, very tired, had a poor appetite, and had a high fever. The patient was diagnosed with septic shock, grade 3 respiratory failure, and suspected rabies.
Doctors put him on a ventilator, administered antibiotics, and used vasopressors, but there was no improvement. The risk of death was high, so the family asked to stop treatment.
According to the family, the child was bitten by a dog two months ago, but the family did not take the child for vaccination but gave him herbal medicine to prevent the disease.
According to doctors, rabies in animals, especially pets such as dogs and cats, is often at increased risk from May to August every year.
According to medical experts, hot weather is a favorable condition for the development of rabies virus.
The incubation period of rabies can range from a few days to several months, even a year. If not properly prevented, unfortunate risks will occur.
Doctor Dao Huu Nam, Center for Tropical Diseases, National Children's Hospital, also warned that many people still have a subjective mentality that dog bites and at the time of the dog bite are normal and are afraid of rabies vaccines. In some cases, children are bitten by dogs but do not tell their families...
Doctors recommend that if a child is unfortunately attacked by an animal, the family should take the child to a medical facility for consultation, wound treatment, and timely rabies vaccination and anti-rabies serum to avoid unfortunate complications.
Actively prevent rabies
According to Mr. Tran Dac Phu - former director of the Department of Preventive Medicine ( Ministry of Health ), hot summer is the time when infectious diseases can break out, especially rabies.
The main cause of rabies is due to dogs and cats with rabies biting people, transmitting rabies to people. To proactively prevent rabies in the hot season, people need to take the following measures:
- Fully vaccinate dogs and cats and re-vaccinate annually according to veterinary recommendations.
- Do not let dogs and cats roam free; dogs on the street must wear muzzles.
- Do not joke or tease dogs or cats.
- When bitten, scratched or licked by a dog or cat, wash the wound thoroughly with water and concentrated soap continuously for 15 minutes. If soap is not available, rinse the wound with clean water.
Then continue to wash with 70% alcohol, iodine alcohol or povidone, iodine. Note that the wound should not be covered. At the same time, the bitten person should immediately go to the nearest medical facility for advice and timely rabies vaccination.
