From paper to screen

While in the past, reading culture was associated with the image of printed books smelling of ink and paper, now, with the development of the internet and smart mobile devices, e-books, audiobooks, and other digital publications are gradually becoming an indispensable part of many people's reading habits.

The development of digital publishing and the abundance and diversity of digital information resources on the internet play a crucial role in nurturing and developing a reading culture. According to the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Libraries, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism: digital transformation in the publishing industry diversifies products and publishing formats, especially the rapid increase of electronic/digital publications. The main digital publishing products include: digital newspapers, digital magazines, online original documents, online educational publications, online maps, e-books, etc.

According to statistics from the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution on publishing and distribution activities in 2023, 24 out of 57 publishing houses participated in electronic publishing and distribution, accounting for 42.1% of the total number of publishing houses, bringing the percentage of electronic publications to 15.3%. Publishing using new technologies increased sharply, reaching 4,000 publications, an increase of 19.4% with approximately 36 million copies.

Each year, the number of publishers participating in electronic distribution is increasing, providing more digital publications, e-books, and audiobooks, meeting the needs of the people and contributing to the development of reading culture.

In addition, most provincial-level public libraries are strengthening their digital transformation activities, building digital databases through various methods such as purchasing access rights, acquiring shared exploitation rights, sharing, and digitizing documents. Besides printed books, libraries also provide e-books/digital books.

The library sector is actively promoting the development of electronic/digital libraries, enhancing digital information resources, and meeting the trend of enjoying reading culture based on digital platforms, electronic/digital formats, and access via the internet.

A solid foundation for a reading culture.

The power of digital publishing and digital information resources lies in their convenience and superior accessibility. With just a smartphone or computer connected to the internet, readers can easily search, buy, and enjoy thousands of books anywhere, anytime. This is especially useful for dynamic young people, those living in remote areas, or those with limited time.

One undeniable advantage of digital publishing is its reasonable cost. Eliminating printing, shipping, and warehousing costs often results in lower prices for e-books compared to traditional printed books, allowing readers to access a wider range of titles without financial concerns.

Despite the immense potential of digital publishing and digital information resources, promoting a reading culture in the digital age remains a significant challenge.

Despite the immense potential of digital publishing and digital information resources, promoting a reading culture in the digital age remains a significant challenge.

Beyond simply digitizing content, digital publishing offers more diverse and engaging reading experiences. The integration of audio, images, and video in digital publications creates an interactive reading space, attracting attention and enhancing information absorption, especially for younger readers. Audiobooks become ideal companions during trips or while doing housework, while interactive books spark curiosity and a desire to explore knowledge.

Despite the immense potential for the development of digital publishing and digital information resources, Vietnam still faces numerous challenges in promoting a reading culture in the digital age. Representatives from the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Libraries stated that the policy and legal framework for the development of the publishing industry still needs further improvement, especially regarding the reform of publishing management mechanisms; and the publishing and distribution of electronic/digital publications.

Many experts also believe that uneven technological infrastructure, the habit of reading printed books, copyright issues, and a shortage of high-quality human resources for developing digital publications are obstacles that need to be addressed.

Digital publishing and digital information resources are not only a trend but also a powerful driving force for the development of reading culture in Vietnam. With the continuous innovation of technology and the efforts of all stakeholders, it can be expected that Vietnam's reading culture will develop strongly.
