AI is reshaping the way people read and receive information, actively supporting the opening of new doors of knowledge for everyone, but also posing many potential risks such as inaccurate information, making people lazier to read, and dependence on AI...

These are the issues raised by Mr. Kenny Nguyen, Technical Director of Coc Coc Technology Company, at the discussion "AI and reading culture" within the framework of the Book and Reading Culture Festival, organized by Nguyen Sieu Middle and High School (Hanoi) today, April 26. With a practical topic, the discussion attracted the participation of hundreds of students.

New ways of reading

According to Mr. Kenny Nguyen, people are getting busier and have less time to read while AI is becoming an effective tool that can greatly support reading. Accordingly, the combination of technology and reading culture not only changes the form but also the way content is transmitted and consumed.

With limited time, readers increasingly opt for short and easy-to-understand content while AI can help summarize long content into key points, saving time and improving comprehension.

AI algorithms analyze users' reading behavior and preferences to provide more relevant, personalized book recommendations. AI can also assist users in explaining complex concepts while reading.

AI technology improves accessibility of books and documents for the visually impaired through reading and format conversion services.

Reading culture is growing in the digital age and formats such as ebooks, audiobooks, and podcasts are becoming mainstream, shifting from reading to listening to serve busy readers, allowing readers to access knowledge anytime, anywhere. Users can also personalize the experience with customization of reading voice and volume.

While it is a useful tool, users should also be aware of its downsides. Over-reliance on AI can lead to readers losing the ability to think independently and deal with information. AI can also cause readers to lose the habit of analyzing and criticizing information, leading to passive reception of information.

Using AI to search for information can lead to readers only accessing one-sided perspectives, limiting their thinking. In addition, using technology also reduces the comfort and relaxation that traditional reading brings.

Must be a smart reader

Sharing at the seminar, many students said they used AI to search for information, summarize book content, and solve difficult exercises.

However, students said that they cannot completely trust AI. “I researched about Truyen Kieu but AI gave the result that the author is Nguyen Khai,” this student cited. They also pointed out the negative impacts of AI such as making people lazy to read and lazy to think. So, how can we take advantage of AI while still overcoming its limitations?

Answering this question, Mr. Kenny Nguyen advised students to use AI intelligently with the 3C principle: balance, initiative and ethics.

Specifically, there needs to be a balance between using new technology and preserving the value of traditional reading. Readers should also proactively research and choose books intelligently, not just relying on AI suggestions. In addition, the use of AI needs to be based on ethical standards, ensuring that technology truly serves human interests.

Emphasizing that AI is increasingly developing and becoming an inevitable trend, an important part in improving people's quality of life, including reading, Mr. Kenny Nguyen said that it is necessary to approach it intelligently and responsibly, ensuring that technology supports but does not replace the role of humans and does not destroy traditional values.

Sharing about the issue of artificial intelligence and reading culture, Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy, Principal of Nguyen Sieu Middle and High School, said that the country is entering an era of national development and the new era is also the era of AI, of the young generation. Therefore, equipping students with knowledge and skills to use AI properly, effectively and ethically is extremely important. That is also the reason why the school chose this topic for the discussion in the book festival and reading culture program.

“In the AI era, you must be smart readers to have a filter, thereby having a healthy and positive lifestyle, thereby developing yourself well and contributing to the community, building the country,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Thuy./.
