Of these, 90 factories are owned by FDI enterprises (accounting for 33.5% in quantity; 51.3% in design capacity) and 179 factories belong to domestic enterprises (accounting for 66.5% in quantity and 48.7% in design capacity). The total demand for concentrated feed (corn, various types of oil cakes, various types of bran, fish meal, etc.) of the entire livestock industry is about 33 million tons/year, mainly used for pig and poultry farming.
To meet this demand, Vietnam needs a huge amount of concentrated feed ingredients, but domestic production capacity can only meet about 13 million tons/year (accounting for about 35% of total demand), the rest comes from imported sources (accounting for about 65%).
The main products of the crop production industry that can be used as animal feed include: 42.8 million tons of rice (mainly broken rice and bran used as animal feed); 4.6 million tons of corn kernels; 10.5 million tons of fresh cassava; 65.4 thousand tons of soybeans.
For additives and main food supplements (vitamins, amino acids...), our country has to import up to 80%, due to lack of production technology, small consumption market, and failure to attract investment.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development believes that to ensure adequate supply of animal feed, production enterprises must proactively seek and make the most of domestic animal feed raw materials; closely monitor world market developments, and have a plan to purchase reserve animal feed raw materials.
In addition, livestock farmers need to take advantage of locally available materials to make animal feed (green food, kitchen and restaurant by-products)...
