Premise of brand positioning in the international market

Gia Lai currently has about 5,450 hectares of passion fruit. The entire province has been granted 48 passion fruit growing area codes, creating an important foundation for participating in the official export market. Ms. Do Thi My Thom - Director of Hung Thom Gia Lai Agricultural and Service Cooperative (Mang Yang district) shared: "Being officially exported to a large market like China will be a premise to position the Gia Lai passion fruit brand in the international market.

However, the challenge is quality control and reputation. Just a few shipments that violate regulations on growing area codes or contain pesticide residues exceeding standards can seriously affect this industry.

According to Ms. Thom, the price of passion fruit on the market is at a high level. This is a good sign for producers. The cooperative is cooperating with local farmers to grow about 300 hectares of passion fruit, of which 85 hectares are grown according to GlobalGAP standards.

With advantages in climate, soil and farming experience, Gia Lai has the opportunity to establish a new position for passion fruit products on the export map. When the official door is open, Gia Lai can build a long-term plan, expand the area of standard raw materials, build chain links, grow under contracts, have quality control and traceability.

Market expansion opportunities

Mr. Nguyen Kim Anh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Doa district, said: “The whole district has about 650-700 hectares of passion fruit, mainly grown on coffee and pepper replanting areas. To meet the current market-oriented export demand, the Department has focused on creating parent gardens with good and stable seed sources; guiding people to produce organically to meet the increasingly strict requirements of the market.

In addition, building a code for growing areas and implementing traceability to create conditions for traders and businesses to officially export this product. In Dak Doa, passion fruit has built a 3-star OCOP product.

Ms. Le Thi Bao Tram - Director of 360 High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative (Trang Commune, Dak Doa District) shared: "To meet the demand for fresh passion fruit, the Cooperative has applied the model of growing passion fruit in greenhouses. The benefits of growing passion fruit in greenhouses help control and maintain stable temperature and ideal humidity for plant growth, protect plants from the impact of harsh weather outside, and limit the invasion of harmful pests.

At the same time, it helps growers easily monitor and handle problems when they arise, thereby helping to increase productivity and product quality. When passion fruit plants are brought into greenhouses, the exploitation period is also longer, and can be harvested for up to 2 years and year-round.

According to Ms. Tram, the yield of passion fruit grown in greenhouses is about 80 tons/ha/year. However, through research, the model can achieve higher yields. Therefore, the cooperative continues to research techniques and apply technology to optimize production in the coming time.

In 2022, the Department of Intellectual Property ( Ministry of Science and Technology ) granted a certificate of registration of the certification mark for the product "Gia Lai Passion Fruit". This is an extremely important factor for the passion fruit industry of the province, helping to affirm the quality and specific origin of the product, a stepping stone to standardize raw material areas, manage the value chain and increase the value of this crop.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Doan Ngoc Co - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment - said: "Passion fruit is one of the four crops planned by the province as a key export group, and is oriented to develop to about 10 thousand hectares.

In recent years, the Department has coordinated with localities, enterprises and cooperatives to focus on building growing area codes, packaging facility codes, implementing many solutions to strictly control seeds and agricultural input materials, applying science and technology to production, promoting production according to VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic standards.

Production that meets market demand will help the passion fruit industry develop, exploit the potential advantages of large agricultural land funds, and increase people's income.
