Why do TikTok singers turn hits into disasters?

Báo Quảng NinhBáo Quảng Ninh20/04/2023

With the support of studio technology, from TikTokers, Vloggers… can all become singers. Many songs are popular on social networks but make the audience “disillusioned” when hearing live singing.

With the development of advanced technology, recording studios are a great support tool for those who want to embark on the singing career. Similar to photo editing applications, vocals can also be edited and adjusted to help singers remove weaknesses, creating a perfect song that helps them confidently launch their products to the market.

However, it is also the technical support of recording and modern recording studios that have brought weak voices who have never even sung before, such as TikTokers, Youtubers, models, beauty queens, etc., to easily access the market. Many people love the trending music on TikTok and then are "disillusioned" when they hear the real voice.

Realizing the virtual power of internet phenomena

Recently, dancer Pham Lich performed live for the first time the song that is making waves on TikTok - La Anh - a Chinese song with Vietnamese lyrics. She received many compliments because she is an amateur singer but has a relatively good voice.

However, compared to the live performance and the clip filmed by the audience, Pham Lich clearly revealed weaknesses in her singing such as breathing and using falsetto. One audience member harshly commented that this performance was no different from karaoke, with high notes being out of tune and suggested that the female dancer should practice more before standing on the big stage.

The lyrics "A king carries the image of the country in his heart, thinking that if the people are at peace, we will never be sad" covered TikTok with hundreds of thousands of uses and inserted into videos . This is the music in the song Kingly performed by Dinh Dung and achieved good rankings on digital platforms for a long time. The MV has reached more than 102 million views to date, showing the popularity of the song.

However, the audience was shocked when the singer revealed his real voice during the performance in Da Lat. Many people criticized Dinh Dung for singing like he was “running away from the enemy”, and felt that the money spent on the show that day was a waste of money. There were many opinions that his singing was not as good as Nam Em’s cover.

That is also the case of male singer Hooligan (real name Le Cong Thanh) with the product To the moon has a catchy melody, the music and pronunciation are internationally praised, so much so that many people are surprised to know that the song's owner is Vietnamese and not a USUK indie artist.

After his performance at a university in Ho Chi Minh City, the audience criticized him for ruining his hit because his live voice was very different from the studio version. His heavy nasal voice was obvious, creating a feeling of being trapped and stuffy, not to mention Hooligan continuously made annoying pronunciation mistakes. One account advised the singer to take vocal lessons again if he wanted to continue performing.

From a TikToker with many tricks, Dat Villa surprised everyone by becoming a singer despite being criticized for having "nothing special about his voice". He released 3 MVs, even accepted shows, and appeared right in the center of the poster with singer Du Thien. The hot TikToker was criticized for revealing his weak voice, revealing his poor vocal skills despite being processed in the studio. The MV was judged to have no artistic value, and some people even advised him to give up his singing career.

TikTokers Ngo Dinh Nam, Hai Dang Doo, Luke D… released well-organized MVs but they were only passable. Most netizens commented that these names should focus on honing their singing voices as a way to polish their image if they really want to pursue a long-term singing career.

"Basic vocal skills are not yet perfect but still holding a microphone to sing"

The current situation of "TikTok singers" when owning 1-2 hot songs on social networks, creating viral waves, performing and revealing shortcomings, many people mistakenly believe that they have real talent while in reality the audience's feedback is quite clear.

Talk to Tien Phong , media expert Hong Quang Minh pointed out: “Regardless of any new platform that appears, there are pros and cons. Social networks help us update information quickly, satisfying entertainment needs. Therefore, it is difficult to bring things with depth and quality to viewers.

The world is being 'invaded' by short videos on different platforms. It is very difficult to determine an artist's ability through a normal song, let alone a short video of a few dozen seconds long. But because it is a trend, it is still viral, still accepted by the majority of the public. That is why the reality is that out of 10 singers who become famous thanks to social networks, only 1 or 2 people stay in the profession for a long time.

According to experts, the idea that "just go into the studio, pick up the microphone and become a singer" has become a bad career example, causing many young people to misunderstand that they can become a hot name on social networks, or that going into the studio, carefully adjusting their voice can make them a singer.

The concepts of “artist”, “singer”, “entertainer” themselves are misunderstood.

“It is clear that many people hold microphones to sing but their basic vocal skills are not yet perfect. This creates the next wave that makes the audience misunderstand this artistic profession. Things that seemed obvious 10-15 years ago to the market suddenly become high standards at the present time,” said communications expert Hong Quang Minh.

"The audience has become more accepting and tolerant of a group of people who have come from social media. I think this is a sign of a period of declining enjoyment."

The problem exists when these "singers" still accept shows, clearly they have an audience that accepts them.

Mr. Hong Quang Minh analyzed: “In the past, audiences appreciated singing voices, even though they were not sure if they could clearly distinguish between good and bad singing voices or quality performances. But nowadays, people pay more attention to visual aspects, which stems from curiosity when they want to see a certain phenomenon on social networks.”

Experts say that many people lip-sync but the audience accepts it because they just need to see the singer holding the mic and posing on stage: "It is true that the audience has accepted and is more lenient with a group of people holding the mic coming from social networks. I think this is a sign of a period of decline in appreciation or a sign of dividing the audience who watch singers out of curiosity and the audience who want to enjoy singers with real talent."

Is it wrong to rely on studio technology?

From the perspective of a recording/studio worker, producer BeeBB (real name Pham Nguyen Phuong Anh) shared with Vanguard that it is their responsibility to bring the best quality experience and product to customers, this is completely reasonable and obvious, creating a complete and well-crafted music product is what both parties aim for.

Live performances have many factors that can affect the experience, from objective to subjective factors such as sound and lighting systems, health, and psychology of the performer.

According to him, producing a song is a post-production process, where both the producer and the singer work together to create the most satisfying product: “The singer can record a part over and over again until he finds it good. In addition, the recording staff also have the ability to ‘carry’ the song, which means instructing the recording staff on how to feel and sing appropriately.”

BeeBB believes that voice correction is not wrong, depending on the genre and intention of the song, there will be adjustments, mixing techniques and effects in different proportions to create the desired result.

BeeBB emphasized the inner strength of the artist, stating that the current music market is very vibrant, but when moving so quickly and strongly, it will create great competition, and at the same time, elimination will also happen quickly.

“The most impartial is still the audience. As long as the audience still loves and cares about the artist’s music products, they will never be eliminated. In return, the artist needs to make an effort,” he shared.
