Pre-marital health check-up is a very necessary thing that couples should do to prevent, detect and treat dangerous diseases early, ensuring family happiness and future offspring quality.
Young men and women need to have a general health check-up and reproductive health check-up before marriage.
Necessary work
Marriage is an important threshold in everyone's life. Before entering married life, each couple needs to be mentally, financially, in terms of relationships, future plans, etc. In addition, health is also a decisive factor in the happiness and sustainability of marriage. Therefore, pre-marital health check-up is very necessary.
Pre-marital health check-ups include general health check-ups and reproductive health check-ups. Thereby, detecting (if any) diseases that can affect the health of both husband and wife such as hepatitis B, HIV or sex-linked genetic diseases, heart disease, reproductive diseases, etc. to have an early treatment plan, avoiding unnecessary consequences in married life as well as the health of children later.
In 2023, the whole province had 2,490 couples of young men and women having pre-marital health check-ups, an increase of 1,659 couples compared to 2013. It can be seen that after 10 years of active propaganda and mobilization, people's awareness of pre-marital health check-ups has increased.
However, there are still some cases where this is taken lightly or there is a fear of it. Some people even think that the examination is because of suspicion of each other, if the examination and disease are discovered, it will affect the couple's happiness.
To change that perception, Hau Giang has mobilized the entire political system to promote and encourage couples to participate in pre-marital health check-ups. As in Vi Trung commune, Vi Thuy district, this is not only the task of the population sector, but also the common task of local party committees, authorities, and organizations.
Ms. Duong Thi Ngoc Mo, Vice Chairwoman of Vi Trung Commune People's Committee, Head of the Commune Population and Development Steering Committee, said: "When receiving information about couples preparing to get married in the area, population officers and collaborators will come to propagate the benefits of pre-marital health check-ups and provide instructions on how to do it. When they go to the judicial department to register their marriage, they will be encouraged to continue. Thanks to the people's consensus, every year, this target is achieved compared to the set plan."
For future happiness
Deciding to get married and go to the ward People's Committee to register their marriage, Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien and Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan Thanh, in area 4, ward IV, Vi Thanh city, were advised and encouraged to have a pre-marital health check-up. "I find this very beneficial because it helps both of us know our health status before getting married and having children, and if we have any diseases, we can get timely treatment. After the check-up and finding no problems, my husband and I are planning to have children," Ms. Lan Thanh shared.
In the Communication Campaign to encourage having 2 children combined with providing Reproductive Health Care - Family Planning and Improving Population Quality services in the province this year, the province sets a target that 100% of male and female couples preparing to get married for the first time (except for male and female couples who already have children together, are old and no longer able to reproduce, are pregnant, etc., registering for their first marriage) will participate in pre-marital health check-ups during the campaign.
The whole province organizes direct counseling on adolescent and youth reproductive health and the benefits of pre-marital health examination. Introduces facilities providing pre-marital health examination services to couples preparing for marriage and related subjects. Organizes health examinations for couples who agree to perform, ensuring compliance with Decision No. 25 dated January 7, 2011 of the Minister of Health on promulgating professional guidelines on pre-marital health examination and counseling.
Mr. Huynh Thai Ngoc, Deputy Head of the Provincial Population Department, informed: “There are currently many places in the province for pre-marital health check-ups. At the district level, there are medical centers. At the provincial level, there are hospitals and medical examination centers. In addition, there are a number of private clinics licensed by the Provincial Department of Health to perform pre-marital health check-ups. If couples are from outside the province, they can go to medical facilities licensed by the Ministry of Health and the Department of Health of provinces and cities.”
3 to 6 months before marriage, couples should plan a health check-up.
