The drop in job postings comes in two phases: half from the post-pandemic “purge” when companies realized they were hiring too much, and the other half after ChatGPT launched in late 2022.
“There is no direct evidence that AI is the cause, but the trend toward automation could explain why the market continues to weaken,” said Brendon Bernard, senior economist at recruitment firm Indeed.
He also said the impact of AI is evident in the types of jobs that are still in demand, as well as the increasing need for experience in the remaining opportunities.
Accordingly, the demand for AI and machine learning-related positions is increasing, while low-level or entry-level technology jobs are decreasing sharply. Current job postings increasingly prioritize candidates with 5 years of experience or more.
Over the past five years, the tech career landscape has changed dramatically: hot areas associated with artificial intelligence and data are gaining ground, while entry-level technical positions or less experienced programmers are losing ground.

It can be seen that in the list of the hottest technology jobs today, AI and machine learning continue to take the leading position.
Positions like machine learning engineers and AI/ML specialists have not only remained in high demand post-pandemic but have also far exceeded pre-2020 hiring levels.
According to Business Insider , machine learning engineers currently receive an average salary of about $260,000/year, among the highest in the technology industry.
Not just AI, enterprise technology roles also remain stable. SAP and Oracle consultants and team leaders remain in demand, demonstrating the importance of enterprise management software.
Meanwhile, the data science field continues to thrive by combining analytical skills with AI tools to deliver business insights.
Brendon Bernard notes that these specialized jobs are among the few in the tech industry that remain in strong demand, despite the trend of tightening staffing.
In contrast, many previously popular programming jobs are in free fall. According to Indeed research, job postings for software engineers—the most common job title in the tech industry—are down 49% since early 2020.
Mid-level programming positions such as Android, Java, iOS, .Net or web programming have all decreased by more than 60%.
