Growing up after the "quiet period" of your 20s
Emerging from the " Hanoi Singing Contest," Hoang Hiep has become busier with invitations to participate in major programs and activities. Despite this, a smile is always present on the young singer's face. Hoang Hiep says that the award from the competition is very meaningful. It marks his maturity. "Thanks to those delayed successes, I am where I am today," Hiep affirms.
The "Hanoi Voice" singing competition is organized by Hanoi Radio and Television Station. This is a prestigious music program aimed at discovering talent and honoring beautiful voices. The competition serves as a launching pad for many young singers. This year, "Hanoi Voice" attracted nearly 1,000 talented singers. Among them, like Hoang Hiep, many young people have returned to the competition with high determination.
“Last season, I was eliminated in the semi-finals of the competition. For me, the failure at the age of 20 wasn't the end, but a necessary pause to reflect on myself, and then return even more spectacularly,” Hiep shared.

To prepare for the competition, for almost a year, Hoang Hiep spent more time in the practice room than in the dormitory. He carefully considered and refined the advice of his seniors. Choosing the classical style for the competition, this young singer competed against impressive, well-trained vocalists. Therefore, reaching the final round was already a success. On the final night, Hiep told himself: Don't focus too much on winning or losing, just give your all on stage.
Choosing two songs, "Vietnamese Girl" and "October Emotions," for the final night, Hoang Hiep surprised the audience with his performances. Many professionals highly praised Hiep's talent, which made the young man from Quang Tri very happy.
Hoang Hiep shared: “Throughout the five rounds of the competition, I received support from many spectators. At the final, my mother, sister, and aunt even came to cheer me on. Those feelings made my joy of winning third place even more complete.”
Rising from the village stage
Watching Hoang Hiep on stage, almost everyone assumes he comes from a family of musicians. However, in reality, Hiep was born and raised in a farming family in Con Tien commune. Like other rural boys, Hiep had a difficult childhood. The difference was his deep love for music. At the age of five or six, Hiep used pots, milk cans, and other makeshift musical instruments, tapping out rhythms and singing with passion. He was rarely absent from school performances.
Later, recognizing Hiep's talent, Mr. Nguyen Minh Dung, a teacher at Con Tien Secondary and High School, helped him learn to play musical instruments and sing more systematically. He allowed Hiep to join a band that performed at weddings and events. After each performance backstage, Hiep's love for music grew a little more. He enjoyed immersing himself in revolutionary songs, paying attention to the techniques of professional singers, and practicing his vocals…

At the end of 10th grade, Hoang Hiep registered for his first competition, "Quang Tri Studio's Best Singing Voice." Although he didn't win a top prize, Hiep was fortunate to be one of the few contestants who caught the eye of the provincial Traditional Arts Troupe's leaders. He was invited to collaborate, train, and perform with the troupe. Seeing Hiep's young age, talent, and eagerness to learn, the artists enthusiastically taught him. Back at school, he established a music club, sharing what he had learned with other students who shared the same passion.
Knowing this, Hoang Hiep's parents and teachers were all happy and wholeheartedly supported him. No matter how busy they were, his parents always made time to come and cheer him on at every show he performed. They hoped their son would shine with his passion and contribute to making the world a better place through his singing.
Choose the taste of home as your unique characteristic.
The time spent studying at school while performing with the Provincial Traditional Arts Troupe for officials and people from the lowlands to the highlands strengthened Hoang Hiep's belief in his choice. After graduating from high school, Hiep focused his efforts on applying to two major music schools. He was accepted into both the Military University of Culture and Arts and the Vietnam National Academy of Music. After careful consideration, Hiep chose the Military University of Culture and Arts to pursue his dream. It was from here that he donned the military uniform.
Studying in a military environment with talented young people, Hoang Hiep was quite anxious at first. He had to reflect on his past progress to remind himself to strive for more. Hiep also diligently learned from those around him. Thanks to this, he quickly developed good breath control, proper vocal technique, and gained a lot of experience in handling songs.
Pursuing the classical music genre, Hiep chooses not to show off his technical skills, but instead incorporates the rustic charm of the sun-drenched Quang Tri region into each song. When this singer performs "October Emotions," the audience is not only impressed by his high notes, but also seems to see the image of his mother, his aunt, and the rice and corn fields.

Through hard work and dedication, Hiep, who was initially a hesitant new student, has become a highly-regarded and excellent student. Lecturer Ngo Duc, from the Vocal Music Department of the Military University of Culture and Arts, stated: “Hoang Hiep has a beautiful, rich voice. That voice is even more impressive thanks to his diligent and dedicated practice. Not only is he a well-behaved and respectful student, but Hiep also actively participates in many activities and movements, contributing to the shining image of the military uniform. We are very happy with the results he has achieved.”
When the stage lights dimmed and the award was put away in its place of honor, Hoang Hiep returned to the rhythm of life as a music student in military uniform. For Hiep, third prize wasn't the ultimate goal; it was the first "standard sound" that would allow him to continue writing more distinctive melodies and lyrics for the symphony of his life.
