Germany has a strong interest in Vietnam's railway infrastructure and technology.
Within the framework of the VRT & CONS 2025 International Exhibition and Conference on Railway Technology and Infrastructure Construction Supply Chain taking place at the Vietnam Exhibition Center (VEC), the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Germany in the fields of railways, logistics and green transformation continues to receive special attention from the business communities of the two countries.
According to Mr. Bjoern Koslowski, Deputy Chief Representative of the German Industry and Commerce in Vietnam, Vietnam is entering a new development phase with many great opportunities in the railway industry. “ The Vietnamese Government and private investors are making strong efforts to promote the railway sector, not only maintaining existing infrastructure but also expanding new connections, applying the most modern technology. In this aspect, Germany can contribute a lot, especially from the private sector ,” he emphasized.

Germany has comprehensive strengths in the design, construction, operation and safety standards of railway systems. German enterprises not only provide technology, locomotives, rolling stock, and signaling systems, but also have extensive experience in management and operational services. In addition, financial institutions such as the German Reconstruction Bank (KfW) or IPAC can provide capital and loan guarantees, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to invest.

In addition, for synchronous development, Vietnam needs to pay more attention to training human resources in the railway sector. “ Currently, Hanoi University of Transport has cooperated with Dresden University (Germany), but the potential for expansion in training and research is still very large. In the field of vocational education , we are also working together to build training programs for technicians, train drivers, and professional maintenance ,” he shared.
Promoting green logistics, training human resources and connecting global supply chains
Discussing the opportunity to integrate into the global supply chain, with the role of Vietnamese small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Mr. Bjoern Koslowski emphasized: “ About 75% of Vietnam’s export turnover is currently carried out by foreign enterprises, while domestic enterprises have not yet fully exploited the opportunity. This is something that needs to change if Vietnam wants to become a strategic partner of Germany in the supply chain .”
German companies are looking to diversify their supply sources outside of China, and Vietnam could become a priority destination if it continues to improve its production capacity and human resources. Moreover, Vietnam’s new policies, such as transparency in vocational school tuition fees, are a positive sign in developing high-quality human resources.
In recent years, Vietnam - Germany cooperation in the field of infrastructure and logistics has made significant progress. Many outstanding projects can be mentioned such as metro lines No. 1 and No. 3 in Hanoi , the cooperation project between SMS Group (Germany) and RUAFAT (Vietnam) in the production of railway-standard steel, or the participation of EIVU (Germany) in the modernization of the North - South railway signaling system.

“ We have witnessed positive movements. This exhibition is a clear demonstration that German enterprises are very interested and ready to accompany Vietnam in the new development stage of the railway industry ,” Mr. Koslowski shared.
Regarding green transformation, Vietnam and Germany have an ideal foundation for cooperation. Vietnam is currently the country with the largest total renewable energy capacity in Southeast Asia, while Germany is a pioneer in clean energy in Europe. In Germany, 20% of goods are transported by carbon-neutral rail. Vietnam can completely apply this model to reduce emissions and optimize transportation costs, especially on the North-South routes, Kunming - Hai Phong or Vientiane - Vung Ang.
The VRT & CONS 2025 International Exhibition and Conference on Railway Technology and Infrastructure Construction Supply Chain was held from November 12 to 15, gathering hundreds of businesses and corporations from Germany, Japan, Korea, Austria, China, Thailand, Malaysia, UK... and domestic units such as Vietnam Railway Authority, Hanoi Metro, Hoa Phat, Vinh Hung, Mico, TRV.
The event includes a series of exhibitions, investment conferences, CEO forums, technical presentations and a railway technology experience day, focusing on key topics such as PPP, TOD development, supply chain localization, green capital mobilization and risk sharing mechanisms.
Many memorandums of understanding (MOUs) have been signed, opening up new prospects for technology cooperation, TBM transfer, MRO systems, railway signaling, green logistics development and high-quality human resource training - towards the goal of modernizing Vietnam's railway industry, reaching regional and world levels.
