Responding to a reporter's question about Vietnam's efforts in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson stated: Vietnam's stance on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is consistent and has been stated many times.
“Vietnam advocates sustainable development of the marine economy , maintaining sustainable development of the fishing industry with a vessel and craft structure suitable to the exploitation capacity of aquatic resources; fully complying with regulations on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing,” Ms. Pham Thu Hang affirmed.
In recent times, Vietnam has built and perfected the legal system on fisheries to ensure effectiveness and efficiency, while implementing many measures to prevent and combat IUU fishing activities, resolutely and strictly handling violations in a public and transparent manner.
Recently, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed and issued the "Action Plan for the peak month against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and sustainable development of Vietnam's fisheries industry".
Vietnamese authorities and localities have been, are and will regularly manage, propagate, educate and implement many specific measures so that fishermen comply with Vietnamese laws and respect the sea areas of countries established in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and relevant international Conventions/Agreements that Vietnam has signed or is a member of.
“As an active, proactive and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam is always ready to work with countries in the region and the international community to strengthen cooperation and share experiences in combating IUU fishing, promoting effective and sustainable fisheries management in accordance with international law,” the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson emphasized.
